So im thinking of building a workstation Desktop for work and stuff but the big argument i have currently is:

Opteron or Xeon?

Im going for a Duel CPU build so i need a workstation CPU but im looking at price to performance.

i know Xeons are much better but they come in at a allot higher price compared to Opteron's

what is your opinion?

i will be doing this as a half gaming rig/ half workstation rig.

I plan on using an Nvidia GTX 790/690 with possibly having a workstation GPU along side it for workstation related things.

to people who dont know, i am a games design and developer. and i need workstation for Lightmass and Cut scene rendering.

I would get a 3930K or there must be a specefic reason to choose the xeon like the extra instructions that it can do or some business/server type of stuff.

Opterons are really more for servers and not really for a WS , you can use it as a ws proccesor but yeah...

Also Xeons are more ''costumer'' grade, unlike opterons which are more oriented for businesses

To compare some scores:

EDIT:

Didn't see you wanted a dual cpu config:

Yeah Xeons are the way to go tbh , for compatibility etc too , you can choose opterons but like a said they are more aimed to businesses and server like applications.

Xeons are the way to go for sure , opterons have so less compatibility and they are really meant for server stuff and cloud computing.

I'm not really into mac os stuff but i think it should work fine with xeons

well if you are looking at a 8 core zeon you can probably go for 2 16 core opterons for a very similar price which will perform better...but they (opterons) are very low clocked CPUs as you may know so they will perform terribly in games. the xeons will do a better job at gaming. seeing that you are going for a dual cpu set up seems like you are hardcore into that kinda stuff where more cores will be benefited..!!!For example the base 8 cored xeons are around 2000 dollars while the higher end ones are around 4000 dollars ....while the very high end opterons are around 1100 dollars so for the price of one mid end xeon you could have two top of the line 16 core opterons and a dual socket motherboard!!

PC 1: CPU: i5 12600k     GPU: RTX 4080     MOTHERBOARD: Asus B650M-A D4       RAM: 16x4 DDR4 3200       POWERSUPPLY: EVGA 650 G6

SSD: WD Black gen 4 x2 + Crucial MX 500 x2

KEYBOARD: Keychron K4    MOUSE: Logitech G502 SE Hero   MOUSE PAD: Goliathus control XL   MONITOR: Alienware AW3423DW + LG 25UM58 + Dell 24"  Speakers: Edifier R1280T + SVS PB1000

Laptop: M1 MacBook Pro 16
