IMAP and POP

Go to solution Solved by Benjio,

I usee gmail, but have a custom domain. if that affects anythign

This should be all you need. These are the settings for IMAP, if you want POP you will need different settings. Also just curious, any reason you don't like the Gmail web email client? I use it myself and quite like it.

  • Incoming Mail (IMAP) Server - Requires SSL
    • imap.gmail.com
    • Port: 993
    • Requires SSL:Yes
  • Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - Requires TLS
    • smtp.gmail.com
    • Port: 465 or 587
    • Requires SSL: Yes
    • Requires authentication: Yes
    • Use same settings as incoming mail server

Setting up the mail app on an imac, how can i tell if i use IMAP or POP mail server?

IMAP is generally the better option to use. You should be able to use either, as far as I know, though.

They both didnt work.

Im not sure if i entered something wrong, or if the 2002 imac is just being stupid.

What program are you using? Does it ask you for any other settings like incoming/outgoing mail servers when you set it up?

Yeah. IM using the stupid apple mail thing.

It asked for incoming/outgoing mail servers.

Do you know what you're incoming/outgoing mail servers are? You will probably have to look it up based on what email you use, eg: gmail, hotmail, etc.

Yep, I believe you need to use gmail instead of your domain, because it is going through gmail's servers.

Yeah, I never liked using separate email programs, the UIs usually suck and they are usually way more trouble than they are worth.

And this one is from 2002 or 2003
