Help Graphic Cards!

Go to solution Solved by jaffacakes,

I want to buy the geforce GTX770 OC 4GB and just wondering if my power supply is strong enough.

PC Specs.

-Gigabyte Greenmax 550W Power Supply

-Transcend JetRam DDR3-1600 CL11 DIMM RAM - 4GB X2

-MSI AMD 970A-G46 Motherboard

-AMD FX-8320 Piledriver

-2 Sata hardrives

Will the GTX 770 work at full capacity or is there a chance it will short out?? Please help.

Please Note I don't have any other components like DVD Roms or sound cards etc.

Trust me don't get that card, it'll use 2.2/2.4GB out of it's 4GB of VRAM. The card was made to support 2GB and when manufacturers made the 4GB version they didn't change the VRAM interface. I'd say get the 290 or 280x, much more worth it for performance/price ratio.

change that PSU if you are getting the GTX770

But if I get one of them would I need a bigger power supply??

you should get a 290 for the same price, also the minimum recommended is 600W but I don't think it will be a huge problem

CPU: AMD FX-8120 | CPU Cooler: Thermaltake Contac 30 | Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3 | Memory: Kingston 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR3-1333 | Storage: WD 1TB | GPU: Gigabyte Radeon HD 7870 | Case: Thermaltake Chaser MK-I | PSU: Thermaltake Black Widow 850W

In a gaming scenario the 770 power draw will not exceed 250W so a 550W is more than enough.

I would make sure the 12V rail is strong enough though.

RIG: I7-4790k @ 4.5GHz | MSI Z97S SLI Plus | 12GB Geil Dragon RAM 1333MHz | Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970 (1550MHz core/7800MHz memory) @ +18mV(Maxed out at 1650/7800 so far) | Corsair RM750 | Samsung 840 EVO 120GB, 1TB Seagate Barracuda | Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (Closed) | Sound Blaster Z                                                                                                                        Getting: Noctua NH-D15 | Possible 250GB Samsung 850 Evo                                                                                        Need a console killer that actually shits on every console? Here you go (No MIR/Promo)

This is why you should not get an FX CPU for ANY scenario other than rendering on a budget http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/286142-fx-8350-r9-290-psu-requirements/?p=3892901 http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/266481-an-issue-with-people-bashing-the-fx-cpus/?p=3620861

770's use around 230W. 500W is enough for most systems with a 770. The question really is, can your power supply deliver 550W?

Gigabyte aren't known for their power supplies, and there aren't many reviews of their units probably for that reason. realhardtechx lists the Greenmax 550W as non-modular, 80Plus Bronze, triple 12V rail, and made by Acbel. The reviews are in russian from sites I'm not familiar in, and due to the lack of graphs it doesn't look like they go into much detail.

Tomshardware suggests the primary is a Nippon, and the secondaries are SamXon. (pretty on par with corsair's lowest offerings.) They found it to be alright. Maybe it's comparable to Corsair's CX Series. But I find it hard to trust it.

Techpowerups announcement of this series a couple years ago suggests Gigabyte offers a 5 year warranty.

If you're going to buy an expensive graphics card, you may as well get a decent power supply. 500W is fine, so long as it really can deliver 500W.

That doesn't make it good.

Just because he has 3 rails doesn't mean each rail is strong. I prefer a single 30 amps rail over 3 7 amps rails any day. I would suggest http://pcpartpicker.com/part/corsair-power-supply-cx500m for a semi-decent PSU. If you are willing to spend more for a good PSU I can recommend http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/corsair-power-supply-rm550.
