Hi guys , i plan to get a 256GB SSD for my whole system . Yes , whole system . I just want to know how much space does Windows 7 home premium / pro + drivers + browers + anything necessary for a new system take ? I will probably use around 50-60 GB , 100GB max for my other usage .

probably want around at least 30GB(10%) free space in the ssd , is it risky ?

If you're currently using not more than 50 - 60GB on your HDD, then why would you would use more on a SSD? If you put your personal stuff (Documents, Music, Movies, etc.) on an external hard drive or something like that, you'll have most certainly enough space ;)

yes its risky, get even a 120gb boot ssd and a 500gb HDD that would be smart or even just a 90gb boot ssd and a 1tb hdd. it is foolish to spend that much on so little storage.

Windows 7 as a fresh install will use about 20gb but with a couple of features and the pagefile it will easily use quite a bit more.

So:

  256gb SSD

- 30gb (free space)

- 100gb (other stuff)

--------------------------

  126gb left

That should easily be more than enough for Windows and a bunch of programs!

Well currently I have too much rubbish that I don't need ( and other people's ) in my 500GB HDD and it takes around half the capaticy

. I plan to get 256GB SSDS only because I'll probably try and manage my stuffs , only install the necessary programmes. A 120GB SSD + 500GB HDD cost the same though in my country . I just want to make sure windows and stuff don't take up more than 50GB then I'll probably be safe .

I'm going to say absolutely not

is it risky ?

I'm going to say absolutely not Windows 7 takes of about 16GB to 20GB of storage, drivers probably won't take up more then 5GB unless you have an excessive amount of hardware and browsers/software of a similar nature eg. media players will probably take up just over 5GB as well depending on how much stuff this includes. (however if it's just a browser the amount of space it will take-up is negligible as long as you don't let your history pileup to a ridiculous level)

In conclusion in my opinion a worst-case scenario you probably looking at 30GB of space being taken up. leaving you with 226GB of space left which leaves 96GB of headroom. so again not risking at all. :D

By the way, go easy Grammar Nazis I'm dyslexic;'#';[p#'; (I'm pretty sure a full stop should go there somewhere :D)

Disabling things you do not need helps too, I do not hibernate or sleep this PC, I turn the PC off and on, SSD gives me windows in under 15s so why not...
Opening CMD with admin rights typing in "powercfg -h off" will remove this 8GB file windows has created for sleeping.

Disabling the hibernation file gives you back (equal to your ram amount), in my case, 8GB file was removed, c:\hibernation."extension "<I cant remember what type of file it is... and because its a system file, it is hidden initially like the pagefile.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

That's with Arma, all the necessary drivers plus more. In a way I regret purchasing it

Win 7 uses just under 40GB... depending a little bit on how the drive's compressed.

But with only 256GB for an entire system, I can't see how you're going to last. But then again.. almost only videos take up a lot of space.

I have over 2TB worth of SFW series (Not counting NSFW*) But only like 300GB of games. And if you don't play a wide variety of games then 256GB will do you fine. Mind, though.. that a 256GB drive will only have about 240GB of actual space once it's installed.

I use around 370gb of data for the entirety of my system so for me it's not, I don't know about how much data you have, lots of movies, tv shows, music, pictures?! just couldn't say... If all you do is browse the web then yeah I suppose it would be fine, but I would try and get a 500gb HDD as well... just in case

PROFILEYEAH

What do people even put in these things?

I have a 250gb SSD with W7 home, not too many extra programs and several 5-10 (not completely sure atm) Steam games. The biggest probably being Civ5. No music movies or personal files, but there are some exes and rars in the download folder. I am sitting right around 100gbs used.

As long as you don't store massive amounts of media, or other types of "media" on it you'll be fine.

If you have the money I see no point in wasting your money on 120gb SSD, 250gb is the sweet spot for price vs performance vs storage right now. You can get a good one for under $200.

I used to have a 128GB but I couldn't quite fit all my stuff on it.  On a 256GB drive right now and I'm sitting comfortably at a little over half full.  I have a few games and my music collection and video editing programs on here.  256GB is plenty for me at least.
