How to play fallout 1?

As an ex-peasant that loved fallout 3 and other rpgs like kotor. I tried to play fallout 1 that i got from GOG but could not get a hang on how the game mechanics work. And sadly and pitifully, may Gaben forgive me, i couldn't figureout how the attack and movement mechanics worked. Maybe i just went full retarded or something for a bit and couldnt figure it out, but i would like some advice before i take another crack at it.

it teaches you, but its extremely oldschool so its not easy.
