My prediction:

1) Download key cap design
2) Print on 3D printer
3) Party like it's 1999

So...I'd +1 the super niche option  :P

I know absolutely no one with a 3D-printer here, or that attends my university. But that just gives me another idea ;) but then again, the quality of the wasd engravings/etching is pretty good vs something I could do myself without spending a whole lot of cash.

If you do decide to do it, advertise in the local tech forums, that's how I got sucked it. I'd go to these forums, and they would post pics of KB's with different caps (be it symbols or colors). Some of these would appeal to me, and I'd look for them. Someone had posted a pic of a DS II with grey key caps that looked damn good to me. It played in my mind till I'd had no choice but to scratch this itch. Hunted high and low, and found someone willing to ship it to me...

The grey key caps that I'd so wanted....

In my neck of the woods, this is also a niche market, not many would bother with swapping out their key caps, but if you can stir the interest.......well, then perhaps you may succeed in this venture.

this is what I'm going to do.

Waiting for the printer, but I have a 3d triforce keycap design ready.

Will work for electronic components and parts

I wouldn't buy a 3d printer for just keycaps. The cheapest one is the makibot for $200 but I don't believe it's shipping yet. Also the quality isn't like molded abs.

Haven't you heard? You can print guns now. I could make a killing (excuse the pun) on the black market!

That's exactly why I want to import them, let the companies with the huge capitals invest in industrial printers, I'll just sell their product :P

Thanks for the tips man, I've got a few people who are already keen for them, and if I can supply and make a few dollars at the same time, then that's fine :)

Word of mouth is a powerful thing, especially if you're the only one with them :D
