Yeah the xeon fits in LGA 1150, but why choose the Xeon?

Price/performance, use case, etc.

They cost what an i5 4690K costs, but perform like an i7 4770.

You may need to update your BIOS for it to work.

Personally I wouldn't have gone with a Xeon, you might be missing out on some features, and believe me or not, the IGPU is still pretty useful even if you have a dedicated GPU.

EDIT: it would appear that I am blabbering nonsense, according to ARK Intel this CPU does have an IGPU, and even Quick sync. It doesn't however have hyper threading.

To say it performs like a 4770 is not entirely true, if a program is ably to use 4+ treads you are at a loss.

Spoiler

Case Bitfenix Ghost, Mobo Asus Maximus VIII Ranger, CPU i7 6700K @4.2 Ghz cooled by Arctic cooling Freezer i30, (barely). GPU Nvidia GTX 970 Gigabyte G1 @1519Mhz core, RAM 16Gb Crucial Ballistix CL16 @2400Mhz. SSD 128GB Sandisk Ultra Plus as my OS drive. HDD's  1TB  Seagate ST31000524AS its OEM, 3TB Seagate Barracuda, 2x 500GB WDC Blue (RAID 0)

If it isn't working absolutely perfectly, according to all your assumptions, it is broken.

This Xeon would appear to not have hyper threading though, the 4770 is much better in that sense, only if no programs used 4+ treads.

Yeah the xeon fits in LGA 1150, but why choose the Xeon?

It's basically an i7 (a bit slower clockspeeds) but at i5 prices. if he is doing multithreaded operations it's a great budget CPU, also has some workstation features.

Check if the bios is updated out of the box, if it is, the system sounds pretty good.

One advise, go with a better wifi adapter, you don't want bad wifi, specially 2.4ghz wifi, as it interferes with everything these days. If your router supports dualband (5.0Ghz) get something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833166046

Tell me this is not the same CPU. For here it is stated that this CPU only has 4 cores and 4 treads, meaning no hyper threading.

So im building this build for an old buddy of mine and im wondering if this is all around compatible? Specifically the xeon and the mobo

How is the system to be used?

The Xeon is listed as compatible from BIOS P1.6 which was released in December 2013. You may want to check with the merchant to insure that the motherboard ships with that BIOS if you don't have a compatible cpu so the BIOS can be flashed.

he plans on doing some workstation stuff and gaming so the xeon is a pretty good choice

I take it the budget is tight. But an ssd and hdd would be much better than the hybrid.

I guess you've gone with 1x8GB to allow for a future memory upgrade. If that is not likely to happen in the near future (12-16 months) I would suggest changing to a 2x4GB kit to improve performance by enabling dual channel memory operation.

I am not sure that a 160 mm psu and the gpu will fit in the case. Antec lists the maximum gpu length at 317.5 mm. The Sapphire R9 280X is 262mm long. This leaves 55.5 mm. The psu mounts on its side and is 86 mm high. It would be better to be safe and go with a 140 mm psu.

BTW the cpu only runs 4 threads http://ark.intel.com/products/80917/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E3-1226-v3-8M-Cache-3_30-GHz. If you want 8 threads you will have to spend a little more and get Intel Xeon E3-1230 V3 (http://ark.intel.com/products/75054/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E3-1230-v3-8M-Cache-3_30-GHz?q=e3-123).

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

mistaken it with the E3 1240 V3, he should step up the hyperthreaded one if he is using the CPU for workstation tasks that benefit from several threads.
