By how much does overclocking reduce the lifespan of the chip? I'm stuck between buying the i7 4790k and the i7 4790. The 4790k already has a higher base clock of 4GHz (vs 3.6GHz on the 4790) straight out of the box. I want this pc to last a long time and I'm not sure what to go with. I will be doing lots of editing. (e.g using After Effects and Premiere Pro a lot). Will overclocking help much with editing?

Thanks,

Overclocking will definatley net you a performance benefit, not say 40% (pulled that number out of my arse) quicker, but there will be a benefit to be had when overclocking. As for the lifespan issue - i still have an OC'd Q6600 @3GHz which i have in a rig i gave to a mate. it still runs perfectly fine to this day, and shows no signs of conking out. All you need to worry about when overclocking is keeping the temps down with an aftermarket cooler, and reasonable voltages.

Go for the 4790k, even if you don't oc it (but you should, moderate clock increases don't affect the lifespan because they don't raise the temperature or need high voltages) you still get better performance as you mentioned.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

overclocking will definitely cut rendering times down in premiere and AE. i wouldnt worry to much about the lifespan as long as you take the proper steps in overclocking and maintain appropriate temps.
