I know, not related to computers, right? Oh well...

I have this Sony NWZ-B172F (an MP3 with 2 GB of storage). Its running fine until the battery died for the first time. After it's charge time, i cannot turn it on, even hard resets can't do it. As a result, this went into storage.

Fast forward to 4 months ago. I tried to open up the player, to no avail. However, when connected to a PC, it acts as an external media drive.

Now, how can I revive this player back to its MP3 function?

Edit: this is the model: http://www.sony.com.ph/product/nwz-b172f/sku/nwz-b172f_nce

There is a link on the site to upgrade your firmware : http://www.sony-asia.com/microsite/walkman_i-manuals/NWZ-B172F-B173F/eng/contents/08/03/01/01.html

Good Luck

Can you access the player through the USB? If you can actually transfer files back and forth then I'd say the player is working on some level. But, it could be that either the battery is truly dead (i.e. not functioning) or some part of the power systems in the player has gone belly up, so that the battery can't power it.

You could try checking the wiring and solder connections around the battery, and check for burnt spots.

A sieve may not hold water, but it will hold another sieve.

As i said in the first post... i can use it as a USB but i will probably send this to my local Sony Service centre as i fear of truly destroying this thing if I do this myself...

This may seem a bit defeatist But honestly sometimes the answer to a question is just give up. Unless it still within warranty which is usually a year. But if not you should treat yourself to a new one maybe of a different make. I wish I could offer a more hopeful suggestions but your mp3 is busted.

look on the bright side you have an overpriced USB Flash drive.

By the way, go easy Grammar Nazis I'm dyslexic;'#';[p#'; (I'm pretty sure a full stop should go there somewhere :D)
