Hey guys,

I'm moving into a student appartment complex in August and I've heard the internet sucks (the speed I'm assuming is what people mean).

I wanted to know if there was anything I could do to improve my situation as I do want to live there but I don't want to be frustrated 24/7.

The place doesn't have wi-fi so its all ethernet, and I already have a router from my last place but I was wondering if upgrading to a higher-class router would help?

Also, would a VPN help? I don't even know what a VPN does but they don't look too expensive and I read Tek Syn's article on it.

anyway, I'm a bit of a noob and have no idea where to start with this kind of thing so all help is welcome.

Thanks ,

-TB

get a router on a different band that is currently there to avoid interference. If you can somehow try to prioritize yourself over others if thats possible.

If the internet connection is bad then thats not something you can change within your house / apartment. You could pay more for a better package (if one is available), but there is nothing you can do such as using a better router that will improve the internet connection. It's a shame, but in America it can be worse as some cities only have one ISP, further restricting the packages available.

To answer your VPN question, a VPN is an encrypted network of computers spread around the globe, through which your data will be sent, the most well known example being TOR. This can help to conceal your identity online and allow access to dark networks, but due to encryption and shoving data around this will slow your connection down not improve it.

I hope this helped a little, good luck :)
