E2B help. formatting?

DarkEnergy

On http://rmprepusb.blogspot.co.uk/2014/05/add-kali-linux-v107-luks-encrypted.html the first thing I am suppose to do is format using this command:  cryptsetup --verbose --verify-passphrase luksFormat /dev/sdbHowever it says that it cannot format a drive in use. So how else am I suppose to do it?

I was able to do most of it but I'm still lost. Near the end it says you should see the persistent volume labeled unrecognized, which mine was. However I still don't get persistence. If I change the wallpaper or connect to a wifi network, on restart it forgets it again. And I do start boot into the encryption with persistence mode. I think it has something to do with this part:

P.S. The persistence file(s) don't have to live in the root of the E2B drive, you can put them anywhere on the E2B drive as long as you also change the path in the .mnu file - e.g. copy it to the same folder as the .mnu file and use this line in the .mnu file

set PERS=$HOME$/kali64-rw

It's a little confusing for me and googling it doesn't help much because there's not much on kali encryption persistence using E2B.
