So I just ordered in some new PC parts, primarily a new GPU and case.

The GPU I owned before was a GeForce GT 610 which of course turned out to be a piece of junk... Anyway the card started making horrendous rattling noises due to the fan being broken I assume.

My CPU is an A6-5400K 3.8GHz Turbo Clocked Dual-Core processor, the new GPU I ordered is an MSI Twin Frozr Gaming Edition Radeon R9 270X card. Yes I know the CPU will bottleneck the GPU, so please don't harass me about that, but my question is how much will it hold back the GPU's full potential?

I also ordered a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo CPU Heatsink so I am hoping to overclock the CPU to a better clock speed. What kind of clock speeds will I be able to achieve?

Thanks for your help guys!

Alright... That's not insane so I can cope with that for now. Besides it will definitely be a huge upgrade in performance from my GT 610. xD

I'm hoping to upgrade my CPU sooner or later though. Any recommendations for an upgrade with the same chipset?

Sorry had to.

But to answer your question you can probably reach about 4.4GHz maybe 4.5GHz.

There; I fixed it. Sorry for not reviewing my post before I entered it. -.-

Anyway, that sounds pretty good and I'll most certainly strive to get those clock speeds.

Yeah I agree with BiG StroOnZ, 4.4GHz is about what you can get to with the 212 evo, though if your case cooling is okay you might get higher. For comparision, I have the same cooler on both a AMD 8350 and Intel 3570K. The 8350 can get to 4.4GHz, 4.5GHz at a push while the 3570K can get to 4.5GHz within safe tempetures.

The Athlon 760K is a better choice, the 760K is a 6800K with no integrated graphics which if you're using a 270X you won't need anyway (and you'll save some money).

Ah ok that'd be a lot better. Is there an upgrade from that with the same chipset and 6 cores?

No unfortunately, that's my main gripe with FM2+. The highest you can go is entry level AMD Quad cores :(

But if he gets the A10-6800K, I believe he can activate crossfire for even more performance in games. If the price difference between the A10 and the 760K isn't a significant factor, get the A10. If you're on a tight budget, go with harrynowl's suggestion.

Ryzen 5 2600 OCd to 3.9Ghz @ 1.275v l Asus TUF Gaming X570-PLUS Wifi l MSI GeForce GTX 1660 Super

GSkill TridentZ RGB 16GB DDR4 l NZXT Kraken M22 AIO l Deepcool Macube 310P

I believe the 6800K only works in "crossfire" properly with VLIW4 GPUs like the Radeon 6670 (that's what my A8 and A10 boxes I have say anyway).

To be honest even if it did work with an R9 270 it'd be dumb to do because the dedicated GPU VRAM would have to slow down to an equal speed and it'd be horrible.

I used dual graphics with a 6670 for my first gaming pc a while back :P

wouldn't recommend.

Oh I didn't know it can only be crossfired with certain AMD GPUs. Point taken.

Well then I guess next year when I want to I'll just order a new motherboard that supports a good 8 core CPU like the F8350 (I think that's the name). Might as well spend the extra cash and not have to worry about upgrades for a few years.

My suggestion is if you change motherboard you'd be best off going with Z97 and i5 instead of FX. Otherwise you're just spending money and hopping to another dead end platform (AM3+).

Are there any good bundles you could recommend me that come with both an i5 (whichever gen is recommended while still being affordable) and a Z97 that will be a fair price next year?

A10-6800k

The Athlon x4 760k would be the better option since he is running a discrete card. He can just overclock it to 4.4 GHz to gain what it lacks in comparison meanwhile save a few bucks.

None as of right now, no one can predict how Broadwell will turn out. Nor can anyone say if AMD will launch a new FX series platform before then. PC hardware advances fast so I wouldn't worry about it until you actually have the money.

By monitoring the gpu load. If you get 50%, with a cpu that doesnt bottleneck at all you'd get twice the fps

Difficult to predict, but on black friday or something there should be some good deals. I'm assuming you're in the US.

Correct, tho hitting 4.4 GHz with a 760k is a given if you have a decent motherboard with a strong enough VRM. The A10-6800k is indeed binned higher, I was able to break the 5.0 GHz mark with mine. The question I have is what motherboard is he running.
