Hi guys!

If i buy a Raspberry Pi and put RISC OS (a OS that is primarely for media i believe) on a SD card and hook it up to my TV, can i have a external HDD with movies on it so i can download the movies on my PC and then plug the HDD in the Raspberry Pi and watch them?

Not that i want to iligally download movies but it just for science..

Yes, as long as your Pi and the OS support the format of your movie

Scroll down

http://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/

It's there, but the Pi version of XBMC might serve you better as a media center

Yeah i know that you can download RISC OS there but the question was more of i could put movies on a HDD and then hook it up to the Raspberry Pi and watch it on that

not sure about that, but if you get a xbmc distro it will work.

I just watched transdence last night on a hard drive playing though the pi. but you can also just let it see the movies on your computer

Can you link that distro?

Yeah i know i can watch it on my PC but it is more for my family and for us all to cram in my room and look at a 24" screen isn't really ideal :P

Yeah this is actually not a big thing to do. Should be pretty straight forward.

no, I meant that you can give the PI access to movies, you can stream them over your network if you wanted. sorry for the poor wording, its very early:P

I use http://www.xbian.org/ that with a slight overclock, and it runs great.

yup. in my house what we have is a WD my cloud that holds all of our movies, you can play back movies on any device, we have a xbmc android box in the living room, the my cloud hooked up to my parents tv, and the pi pi hooked up to the basment big screen. So every single tv/computer/phone/tablet in the house has access to the collection. Its pretty sweet
