Storage Choices

Go to solution Solved by Jaytn,

I would check some reviews of the 840 EVOs for the performance difference between the capacities, eg anandtech here:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/7173/samsung-ssd-840-evo-review-120gb-250gb-500gb-750gb-1tb-models-tested

And this link from tomshardware for SSD RAID 0:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ssd-raid-benchmark,3485.html

In a nutshell IMO:

Usually a bigger capacity SSD will be better in nearly every way than the same with a lower capacity.

RAID 0 will give you better performance in some cases but in others may actually be worse. Plus, it has the usual hassle being RAID 0.

So you should check what exactly you want, if RAID 0 or rather a bigger SSD.

I personally would go for the bigger one because:

1. usually the $/GB goes down with capacity increase (one bigger is cheaper than two smaller ones)

2. with SSDs it would not be worth it for me to go RAID 0 because I rather want a reliable, low latency drive than ultra fast read/write speeds; and I do not trust that SATA 3 RAID 0 would be reliable enough, let alone worth the hassle to set up and maintain.

That said - I have two 500GB HDDs in Raid 0 right now, though they show some signs of problems already for some time. So I am not against RAID, just would not do it with SSDs.

Hope that helps you make your decision :)

I am debating on which storage solution I should with. I have made a poll to see the information more clearly.
- I mainly do gaming and steam cloud does a good job at saving my saves

- Any important documents are saved in the cloud

Personally I would do the raid 0 option, though I would not recommend it for many reasons

But honestly you will not benefit a massive deal

Also  you can probably get 2 bigger crucial mx100s and raid them instead, or get a much bigger SSD if you go single drive

Desktop - Corsair 300r i7 4770k H100i MSI 780ti 16GB Vengeance Pro 2400mhz Crucial MX100 512gb Samsung Evo 250gb 2 TB WD Green, AOC Q2770PQU 1440p 27" monitor Laptop Clevo W110er - 11.6" 768p, i5 3230m, 650m GT 2gb, OCZ vertex 4 256gb,  4gb ram, Server: Fractal Define Mini, MSI Z78-G43, Intel G3220, 8GB Corsair Vengeance, 4x 3tb WD Reds in Raid 10, Phone Oppo Reno 10x 256gb , Camera Sony A7iii

Based on the poll, the RAID array would cost you $200, and store ~240GB.

You can save $20, store ~250GB, and not have to deal with RAID setup if you just get the single drive.

or is there something in the prices that I'm missing here?

Git Gud.
