Hi there,

I've always been wondering about how bad can file system fragmentation affect an SSD... I mean, an HDD with around 20% fragmentation at 70% capacity is slow, but will it be as noticeable as an SSD with 20% framgnetation at 70% capacity??

Fragmentation isn't really an issue on ssds. It was an issue on hdd's as the hdd would have to search in different places for different parts of a file/program. On a mechanical drive it's an issue as they're relatively slow to seek and read. On ssds it's virtually instanteous seek speeds.

Defragging an ssd also reduces it's life span by erasing and rewriting data.

Thanks for the quick responses.

Hopefully, I'll manage to get an SSD by Q2 2015... For now, I'll be stuck with 3 HDDs of varying brands and capacites...

SSDs are cheap these days?

I think they'll get cheaper as better ones roll out... Also, I'm still a student (can't get a part time job because of a the shitty job market and the fact that my univesity is completely inflexible when it comes to attendance and academic loads) so I'll most likely have to wait longer before I can make a purchase...

Also my weekly living expenses amount to around 30USD a week and my weekly allowance is around 33USD when converted (just to paint the picture)

Actually, SSD are heavily fragmetted by default, since internaly (you dont see this, because it maps sectors on its own) they spread the data across all the flash chips to increase speeds and reduce wear. Even it it looks heavily fraggmeted from file systems perspective, it wont affect the speeds in any way.
