Stuck on DRAM led

Go to solution Solved by Incblob,

Only thing you need to do is find what is the cause of it not booting.

Do you not see any logos? like the MB logo etc

You could try each component on a different computer.

The fault could be the motherboard, maybe your short circuited it and fried the MB or something fell off or is bent.

i'll send it back for replacement, everything else is either new or stuff that worked fine on my previous build.

Well, new motherboard, new cpu are just a pile of silicon at the moment because the ruddy thing doesn't boot.

it's stuck on the DRAM led.

According to Asus self diagnosis the RAM isn't compatible with the mobo. but i just bought new RAM in the hopes that that was the bloody problem!

And it still won't boot!

it's an Asus Sabertooth Mark 1, with a i7 4790k.

Anyone have a clue? cause i'm guessing defective mobo.

thanks for your help.

and memok! bios flash, and cmos clear don't seem to help...

edit:

old RAM was the vengeance 16Gb kit cmz8gx3m2a1600c9, these were NOT officially supported.

new RAm is the kingston KHX2133C11D3K4/16GX , these are listed as officially supported both in the manual and the asus website.

neither of these work.

When i put even one stick in, no beeps form the system speaker no Boot and stuck on DRAM LED.

Without RAM, i get the beep code for no ram detected.

Your Motherboard supports up to 1866Mhz RAM in DUEL channel with Non-ECC, Un-buffered Memory.

And your CPU supports RAM speed up to 1600Mhz

Are you able to boot int your BIOS?

Check that the Motherboard is powered correctly and the power cables are connected properly.

Boot into BIOS and reset the settings, if not clear the CMOS.

Try booting with 1 RAM stick.

Ensure your RAM are placed properly

It should be

DIMM 1:  INSERT RAM

DIMM 2:

DIMM 1:   INSERT RAM

DIMM 2:

What I do know is that your current RAM is DDR3-2133 which is over the values

Your Motherboard supports up to 1866Mhz RAM in DUEL channel with Non-ECC, Un-buffered Memory.

And your CPU supports RAM speed up to 1600Mhz

stated. Whether that's the issue, I do not know.

The fact that its 2133Mhz RAM does not matter, By default the RAM will be clocked at 1600Mhz until changed in the BIOS.  This means it will be 1600Mhz if he has not changed it and does support the defaults 1600Mhz and 1866Mhz which his MB/CPU does support.  But using 1866Mhz may not work since the CPU does Not support it,

but that's the maximum, not standard, and the mem ok! button should deal with that if that was the problem.

Unplug your HDD and take the RAM out and power it up.

If you get the beeps, plug the RAM in (Leave the HDD unplugged) and See if you get the beeps.

Take the RAM out, and plug the HDD in and listen to the beeps.

If you hear the beeps then POST is working.

What happens when you push the MemOK button when its RED?

Are you sure the RAM is properly inserted and that it is locked in? with the fold/flappy things i dunno what they called are shut :D

As long as there is no RAM in there are beeps, with ram, nothing. No indication that it booted.

memok! circles through the different memory profiles, like it's supposed to, but still no boot and the DRAM led remains lit after the profiles are through.

Looking on line other things i have found:

  • Completely remove all Power to the computer, So unplug it from the wall or power off the PSU
  • Find the jumper (should be in the Motherboard Manual somewhere) and reset the MB
  • Make sure nothing is damaged on the Motherboard or fallen off
  • Take out the CPU and put it back in.
  • Take out the GPU and boot/test with it not in.

Do you hear the Hard drive booting? the hard drive may not be turning on, so it actually is Booting but cant find a OS to boot up etc.

it's a new rig, there isn't an OS to boot :P, but if i can't even get into the bios or see anything on the screen ,and OS is kinda pointless.

But even with my old ssd with an OS, no difference.

What connection are you using to? HDMI, VGA, DVI? if you can try using VGA since the MB may not be able to display  on HDMI or at your monitor resolution unless changed in BIOS

make sure that the display cable is plugged into the MB to the TV and that your on the right AV/PC or such setting :D

I know on My MB, that the HDMI doesn't display correctly so i have to use a VGA connection. Could be something similar to yours. Try and use a VGA.

Can you plug the RAM into another computer to see if they work?  If it works in another computer then its not the RAM causing it not to boot.

Try

  • Unpluging all power cables
  • Take out the RAM
  • Take out the HDD
  • Take out the GPU
  • And any thing else that is pluged in.
  • Remove all USBs etc
  • Make sure the Mouse and Keyboard are pluged into USB 2.0 and NOT USB 3.0

Then reconnect the power cables so you have the Large cables, 24V and most proberly 1 or 2 other power connection on the MB like a 4v or a 8v.

  • Power on and listen for POST
  • Inserted HDD and listen for POST
  • Insert RAM and listen for Post.
  • If POST worked and your heard no BEEPs or 1 BEEP which sometimes means POST is OK
  • Power everthing off, and plug the Display Cable in from MB (NOT GPU) to the TV, preferable using VGA cable
  • Make sure TV is on correct setting
  • Then power on the PC and see if it boots

If possible can your upload a Picture of your MB and maybe a recording of it Booting

i've been trying to solve this problem for a week now, i've tried every possible combination and nothing works. I've only posted today because the new RAM arrived and i held out hope that it would somehow magicaly work.... :(

there is no VGA connection on the mobo, and the onboard graphics i think are supposed to work with hdmi.

the only time i get a beep is when i take out the ram and the beep is only the code for "no RAM installed" so yeah...

Are you sure everything is compatible?

When you power it on, does everything power up? CPU, HDD, Fans etc. listen to them. If they all do them it most probably is something to do with the display

Are you sure everything is connected correctly, and there is sufficient power going to all components?

Are you sure nothing on the MB is broken?

You can try to use a Bootable USB and see if it boots into that.

does your Keyboard and mouse light up or work?

Im starting to run out of ideas lol
