Hello. Does anyone know of any (preferably free) solutions which add the ability to export .STEP/.STP files from Google SketchUp?

It seems ridiculous that Google doesn't support the industry standard. Hopefully there's a pain free solution out there.

I have already Googled and seen several plugins and utilities that offer import and/or export, but I want someone with experience to recommend a solution.

Cheers,

Chris.

You guys are crazy. You know you guys are self-destructive. There's a funny farm somewhere and it's got your names written all over it. But I'm gettin' outta here.

Don't use SketchUp.

I recommend OpenSCAD.

I know... It's a piece of shit.

I just want to be able to harvest the mahooosive library of SketchUp models on the 3D warehouse and use them in a proper CAD program.

Personally I use Creo Parametric for engineering type models and 3DS when I went through a game designing period.

You could probably convert it to something and then convert that to something else using another program and eventually get to .stp. Is that too vague?

Makes perfect sense.... but how and what programs do I need?

I found a very tacky work around a while ago where if I export it as a .obj, I could then import it into Creo, but doing it that way leaves me with an uneditable mess. Really it needs to be a step file.

I don't have a solution for your issue, I've only ever gone from autocad and revit into sketchup. And Sketchup has its place, mostly for hobbyist, but I know several worldwide architectural firms that do all their render board images in Sketchup. It's fast, easy and cheap.

Give this site a try, it's a personal favorite.
