Recently, my internet has been dropping connection, meaning we can't connect to anything. Another problem is that speeds are sometimes high and sometimes low (15 mbps down to 2 mbps), but the connection issue is the more important one. The internet plan that I have is the standard plan from Time Warner Cable (15/1).

The status light on the modem (d-link dcm-202) (the router is a linksys wrt310n if it matters) will start blinking when we don't have a connection, so I just unplug it, wait, and then plug the power in. The issue has become more common, now on a daily basis of about 2-5 resets a day.

Is this perhaps a problem with the modem? I used to be able to play League of Legends with my brother and sister without high ping before(1 or 2 years ago on a similar plan I believe), but now it seems unstable (for both wired and wireless), although I suspect it could also be due to riot's servers too.

If it is the modem, I was thinking of purchasing a motorola sb6121 since I doubt we will be upgrading to anything higher in speed than this plan anytime soon. I wanted to get opinions before purchasing it so that I don't waste money.

Are you able to get another router and test it? This happened to me with an old router, had to reset it multiple times a day to connect. Replacing it fixed it

check all the cables first

before you do any device replacement

a bad or worn out cable may also be the cause of internet dropping

Lowest speed is 2mbps. That breaks my heart as our highest speed is around 3mbps and the lowest is 384kbps. :(

Are you thinking about the coaxial cable connected to the modem? How would I check that without a replacement?

yea check for sign of external damage, like plastic covering coming off and you can see the inside of the cable

check the connections points and loosen them to verify if the copper strand inside is ok and not blacken

re-tighten the points

they can be bought quite cheaply form your electronics store

it should be similar as the one use for your cable TV
