Hey all, so I'm having an issue with my computer turning off.  Its not shutting down like I went to windows and hit the shut down button, its like someone pulled the plug. Off instantly, monitor black, ect.

This is happened a few times now, usually 2-3 on 3 separate occasions.

I'm not sure if its connected to the issue at all or not, but every time this has happened I was playing World of Warcraft, but I'm not sure what that could've done.. I think its a psu issue, but I don't know a lot about computer stuff like this so I'm probably wrong.

Specs;

CPU; AMD FX-8320 w/ Hyper 212 Evo cooler

Motherboard; Asus M5A97 R2.0 ATX AM3+

Ram; G.Skill 8 GB DDR3-1600

Hard drive; Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM

GPU; MSI GeForce GTX 760 2GB TWIN FROZR

Case; HAF 912

PSU; EVGA 500W 80+ Bronze Certified

Thanks for the help!

download HWMonitor to check CPU temps

Use GPU-Z ID to check GPU temps

run Unigine benchmarks and see if the system will crash

do a MemTest

how old is the system?

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

I knew i forgot something... I forgot to mention that I've check temps before and everything seemed fine.  CPU at around 30 degrees and GPU at around 50.  I'll have to try Unigine though.

The system is pretty new.  I built it late December, so its only about 8 months only

I was also having this issue with my pc and I havent figure it out yet. It actually hasnt happened in about a week, but a week ago I reinstalled back to Windows 7. If it doesnt happen in a months time, I will consider it resolved and I just suspect my windows 8.1 install was corrupted.

I am using the FX6300...and the same brand you have for ram but a lower speed. I would suggest running memtest for 3 hours to make sure there is nothing wrong with your ram. Honestly, if you didnt find anything on memtest after 3 passes, then its probably not your ram.

Does your motherboard have mosfet coolers?

I'm pretty sure it does.

And I have windows 8.1 on my PC too, so that could be it.  And I'll be sure to run memtest for 3 hours

I think what caused the problem was the fact that my windows 8.1 install wasnt fresh. I upgraded from the website and Windows 8.1 installed over my Windows 7. I didnt have a cd so I wasnt able to reformat the drive before the download. When 8.1 finished installing, there were still files from Windows 7 that I couldnt open. Reinstalling back to 7 seemed to fix the problem!

Sort of update to the situation; It just happened about 20-30 mins after I turned on my pc, so it can't be overheating.  Also, in order to get it to turn back on I need to unplug the psu and plug it back in or else it won't turn back on. Not sure if that has anything to do with it though.
