Why does 650ti boost out-perform 670?

My Graphics card is a Gigabyte Nvidia Geforce GTX 670OC 4Gb and my friends card is a Gigabyte Geforce GTX 650Ti 2Gb Boost yet for some reason when I run benchmarks my card can only run 50 or 60 frames per second while his card hits somewhere between 120 and 170 frames per second. I need more frames on my graphics card because FRAPS recording takes a massive chunk out of my frames, and I think there may be something wrong with my card because of how well the 650 does compared to my 670

In case the issue is something to do with our specs, they are:

Mine-

3770k@4.0Ghz

32Gb of ripjaws RAM@1600

670 4Gb

G1 sniper 3 motherboard

3Tb seagate barracuda

800 watt 80+ PSU

His-

3770@3.4Ghz

8Gb patriot RAM

650ti Boost

Asus p8H61-MLF

120Gb Samsung SSD

I'm not sure which PSU

Could it be that maybe my motherboard doesn't support PCI gen 3 or something while his does

I am good at computer

I would look more at the resolutions that your monitors are running also make sure you have the latest drivers installed. drivers really do make a lot of difference.

CPU: AMD FX 6300 @4.2GHZ | MSI 970A-G 46| Gskill Sniper 2X4GB 2400| Samsung 840 EVO 120GB| NZXT Phantom 410 gunmetal|

Apevia 680W Iceberg| HIS R9-270X| WD green 3TB|

The 670 should be outperforming the 650ti boost for days even if you overclock the 650ti boost. PCI-E 2.0 doesn't affect the bandwith that much and you'll only notice a small FPS difference when going from PCI-E gen 3 to 2 and vice versa.

1. Are you running a higher resolution compared to him?

2. Have you turned up the details and effects in the game while he hasn't cause that'll affect FPS quite a lot too.

Try disabling V-Sync before benchmarking.

I was benchmarking using passmark and it's included 3D mark. My monitor is running 1920 by 1080 and his is 1600 by 1200 but I still feel like my graphics card really isn't performing as well as it should

You need to compare the cards on the same res, same settings and same drivers.

The GTX 670 is a fantastic card.

It should be a fantastic card, but I'm rather underwhelmed for the $500AU I paid for it, any ideas to increase the stock performance by quite a lot?

Are you getting 50-60 fps while recording? If so maybe you forgot that fraps caped it at recording framerate. Have you been at your friends place to see if he is getting those framerates? he could be talking trash to make you feel upset about your purchase. maybe he isnt running the same settings and resolutions as you

I'm getting those frames while not recording and I have a feeling I should be getting 100+. And yeah, I'm pretty sure he isn't just saying this stuff because I did the tests myself. Thanks though

well i read the rest of the thread and you said it your self. he is running at 1600x1200 and you are running 1920x1080. You have to render out 60 20730 pixels while he is only rendering 1920000 pixels. 1920000/2073600*100= 92.59%.

You are in the wrong here and need to accept that resolution makes a massive difference. Also, remember that value decreases when you get high end parts. That means that just becasue you paid 2x the price for a graphics card, it doesn't mean you will get 2x the performance

in the real world it doesnt beat the 670. even running at slightly different rez shouldn't affect performance that much when you have plenty of gfx ram.

so my guess would be you have something different set in your gfx control panel. maybe you have super sample enabled while his is on performance rather than quality.

so try resetting your nvidia panel to defaults making sure things like vsync are set to app controlled.

vram doesnt really have much to do with it since both of them have enough for 1080p

that was the point i was making. the screen rez isnt gonna affect performance a huge amount because both cards have over 1 gig of gfx ram. thus my suggestion he reset the nvidia panel back to default and delete any game profiles.

no.... Screen res definitly affects performance.... vram doesnt matter is what he was saying.

and thats what i said. the difference between the 2 screen sizes is pretty nominal because they are pretty close in size. its not like 1 guys gaming at 1600/900 and the other is 2560/1400, then there would be a large impact on the fps. most likely as much as 50% in some games.

but at the difference he's talking about it really wont be that big of a difference.

yes when you write the number of pixels down they are large numbers but in the scale of things from 600/400 all the way up to 4k rez there pretty much next door to each other. so like i said . the amount of ram they have to the screen rez there running the 670 should be punishing the 650ti.

my guess is your either comming up short on power. your card isnt running at the correct multiplyer. or you have bad drivers. along with many other reasons like fragmented hdd's slow hdds and so on... i recommend you try your card in his machine. it will either run better on his or it wont. if it does then you know the problem is with the rest of your setup.

dont forget to check your admin logs to see if a driver is faulting.
