Should I wait for Broadwell?

Go to solution Solved by i_build_nanosuits,

Reasons?

BTW, I laugh a little every time I look at your "attempting to give a damn" profile pic that you have. Funny stuff.

broadwell is not a new micro-architecture, it's a die shrink....so it's a ''tick'' only, performance will be very similar to haswell, new sets of unused and un-needed instructions will also probably be added as it's always the case. defenetly not worth the wait get an haswell refresh CPU.

Skylake will be the next real new architecture that should outperform haswell but this is in a distant future and remains to be proven.

Skylake will be on a new socket (1151) and will support DDR4...so basicaly this is the next ''real'' step-up to haswell but will probably not be a worthy upgrade to any haswell i5 or i7 for most users.

Hey guys. It's me again. I've got something else to ask.

I need to upgrade my CPU from an old i7 920 because my mobo died. People here suggested me to buy a z97 mobo and an i5 4690k. However, after doing some more research I found out that Broadwell, the new CPU architecture by Intel, is coming out for late 2014.

Here's the question:

Should I wait for Broadwell to come out or not?

P.S. Keep in mind that my upgrade isn't urgent. I can wait if necessary...

I'd just put it quite simply and say: Wait if you wanna wait, don't if ya don't. ;)

no, broadwell is not a new architecture it's a die shrink, so it's a ''tick'' only, performance will be similar to haswell, most likely with 3 to 4% maximum. new sets on unused and unnedeed instructions will also probably be added as it's always the case. defenetly not worth the wait get an haswell refresh CPU.

Thanks again i_build_nanosuits. You've been very helpful  :)

you are welcome ! ;)

Skylake should hit in late 2015 if you want to wait for that, it will be more efficient and probably faster as well, but now that intel has no more competition in the high-end CPU departement one can assume that the prices for these will be pretty steep, it will also probably take a while before DDR4 will become widely used so the price for those dimms will also probably be quite high.

i see you run a 920 with a 560ti, if you use this sytem mainly for gaming you should consider upgrading your GPU to a radeon R9 280X, that would give you the best improvement for your dollars in games that's for sure and your current CPU should get the most out of it...it's defenetly a much worthy upgrade for you and that's what i would do if i was in your pants.
