Charging in sleepmode?

So basically i want to charge my phone (Nexus 4) in my macbook pro while its asleep but everytime i plug it in (when computer is asleep) it charges for about 10 seconds before it stops. Ive managed to use other usb devices while the computer is sleeping like an usb fan (i know right) and they work fine so why cant i charge my damn phone?! 

I remember this actually working a few months back. Solutions?
