Is GPU under 98/100% load safe?

Hi all

I usually like to give an elaborate and detailed OP when I make threads but there really is not much to it, my GPU runs under 98/100% load a lot of the time (reasons why are logical) but I was wondering is this safe or will it damage the card in the long term?

Temperatures seam ok at 75 Degrees C Maximum.

If it only reaches 100% during games, rendering, or that kind of stuff then you're fine. If it's full load when you aren't pushing it, then that's a problem

Me: Yeah I just really can't get my H220 working again, I've tried everything that was suggested in the forum.

Brian (Swiftech Support): Hmm, have you tried slapping it?

totally fine : ) obviously the card would last longer if not put under load but they are designed to do that

Well I run Eyefinity and thats when it hits full load, at the moment with an Eyefinity enabled game in the background its at 0 spiking to about 10 every now and then.

Thanks for the help, out of interest whats the maximum temperature that is acceptable before I should get worried? Its a XFX HD7970 Ghz Edition with their DD cooler.

I personally wouldn't let my card reach over 80c, but I'd say the highest safe temperature would be around 90c.

Yes, I remember seeing a recent Linus Tech Tips episode, where he said it was completley safe for GPUs to get up to 90-95 degrees c.

Ok thanks a lot for the help, I'm about to upgrade my case to a 600T and get a second HD 7970 for Eyefinity so that should ease the load and temperatures as it looks like a fairly roomy case with a big fan in the front. But its good to know I'm (for now at least) below the maximum temperature.

It depends on the gpu, some 4xx nvidia cards could go over 100 degrees. Just use 90 as a marker, you shouldnt touch that really and if you do it wont be a "huge" problem

Yep, sounds like a good idea. The only problem with two cards close to each other would be temps may increase, but as long as they are the blower type coolers, all of the hot air will go out of the case, so that shouldn't be much of a problem.

Any time, good luck!

Ok thanks a lot, they are blower type yeah, I think they exhaust a certain amount down at the motherboard and a little bit out the side but its mostly going out the rear of the card (I think) My motherboard allows me to have a gap between the two cards so in terms of layout my PCI slots will be

SoundBlaster Recon 3D Fatality

XFX HD7970 GPU1

Second slot for GPU1

----Blank----

XFX HD7970

Second slot for GPU2

KillerNic 2100

Although I might swap the KillerNic and the SoundBlaster around since there are two cables for a breakout box which may be easier to route if the SoundBlaster is on the bottom.

Since the killernic is quite short and the GPU is twin fan I hope it will be ok as the second fan will definately have full free airflow and the first will hopefully be only half covered, I'm also going to remove one of the front drive cages on the 600T and although I am leaving the bottom one where it is at the front (power supply is to long for me to shift it away from front fan) I think I'd be able to mount a Static Pressure Fan between the HDD cage and the Optical drive cages using a bit of thought and modification.

Hopefully that should all be enough to keep it cool, I'm hoping two 7970s will have a degree of redundancy meaning they wont be under full load getting warm anyway.

Even 90C is fine for GPUs, of course most people do not feel that it is safe for it to be running at those temperatures.
If you feel that the temperatures are too high, download MSI Afterburner and set up a custom fan curve.
