Longest ethernet cable?

Go to solution Solved by Rorgash,

i think below 100 meters and you wont have ANY issues, much longer and you might lose a few mb/s

I am moving to a new student place and ordering 100mbps internet. The router will be downstairs in a 5 bedroom house and I have a room upstairs so I will need an ethernet cable that will reach both points,

I was wondering what the difference between cat5e and cat6 was and if it has anything to do with my situation (speed and length). Right now I am using a 15m cat5e cable and I doubt that will be long enough as this one didn't have to go up any stairs. I was thinking of getting 50m to be safe,

Cat6 is the "new standard" but hasn't really been implemented yet. Just go cat5e there is really no need to get cat6, they come in insane lengths so you will have no problem their. You could always just make your own too.

I'm sorry but that is not true at all.

Honestly, just get a tape measure and go along the path it will be laid (try to loop it along the floor moulding to avoid tripping) and once that is measured, add 10 feet for caution.

Even if a wire is rated for that distance, a few packets will be dropped/corrupted, and the next router in the line will have to send a NAC. As wires get longer the number of packets dropped/corrupted rises plainly due to the Earth's fluctuating electrical and magnetic fields and the time a packet is exposed outside of stable RAM/registers. It sucks but it's true. Now, we've remedied most of the problem with better shielding and ECC on both ends of the line as well as signal redundancy, but it doesn't solve everything.

ok so it can be even longer.. k companies making the cables state longer lengths without problems...

It depends on what people need and if they make them themselves. There not a usual thing to make but it's not some strange thing, I know some hospitals here have some around that length.

We have implemented cables that long for hospitals and there has been no difference between shorter cables.

So over a copper cable the signal begins to degrade at 300ft, after that you need to have a booster or something to revitalize the signal.

That's about right. It can be mitigated with stronger tin, gold, or aluminum shielding in the plastic, but as I said, it's not perfect.

Cat6 has been a thing since ~2006 and I wouldn't go past 150 feet with Cat5e not to mention Cat6 is the same price nowadays so your points are moot.

Cat5e should be able to go around 100 meters without problems, but CAT6 is the same price and you can buy rolls(1000 feet) of CAT6 on amazon for like $150 USD. You likely don't need 1000 feet, but you could find shorter lengths easily.

This i correct from what i know and have herd from countless people in the industry; if someone tells you different they are probably misinformed or taking unnecessary risks.
