Not an expert, but from watching Linus's videos they are very worth it. Way better life expectancy, you don't need any sort of inverter, plus led strips are flexible. Overall, leds are miles better.

LED's are just just plain easier to use and install, no need to worry about it ageing, and inverter as said before, the difference is cold cathode give a more apparent ambient or soft glow since it's light from 360 degrees, with LED you can get basically the same result as long as you orient the LED's correctly.

As bitfenix alchemy strips go they're pricy for what they are but for someone who just wants something to plug in and work, with a warranty on it they're pretty solid.

okay I'll just go with cold cathodes as I'm just going for a nice ambient glow

Personally I don't recommend cold cathodes, since they are somewhat a hassle especially with color degrading overtime, you can get a really nice glow with LED's just don't point it towards the window in the case, try installing on the top of the case to behind the lip where the door latches it gives a pretty nice even glow.
