Hi guys, im have no experience at all with programming apart from a little visual basic at college. I've been searching for a programming language to start with and people say that Java is a good one, i would just like to know if i should start with Java or is it too hard for a beginner to grasp.

Java isn't hard for a beginner to grasp: it is often the first language a student learns in Computer Science.

Learning Java implies learning Object-Oriented Programming. "Java Concepts", by Cay Horstmann is a good introductory book to Java and OOP.

My professors in College usually said Java is one of the more difficult ones to comprehend as your first because you start off in a OOP perspective. When I asked, most of my professors told me to start with either C/C++ in an non OOP way to grab the basic concepts and then go from there. With that being said, Java was my first language and it took some effort but I was able to get it down. I am not a Computer Science major so coding is not my main area, but as an Information Technology major they required me to take a Java class, hence my Java was my first language.

Java was my first programming language and I'm currently trying to re-learn it. It's extremely popular and useful to know and but I haven't really used it for almost 4 years. I'd recommend tutorials from lynda.com if you're willing to spend money. There's a couple tech channels sponsored by the site that give a 7 day free trial I believe.
