I have a friend who is deciding between these laptops an I thought you guys could help him :)

Lenovo y50 Touch ($1399 Model); http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/lenovo/y-series/y50-touch/

MSI Ghost; http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152567&cm_re=msi_ghost-_-34-152-567-_-Product

If you have an alternative laptop please list your reasoning. Thanks. :)

y50 because lenovo has great reliability and build quality as a general rule, also the fancy keyboard is probably no match for a no frills lenovo keyboard

I would recommend the non touch model because it will be a matte display where the touch display of the Y50 touch will create reflections.

Actually, I take it back, I'd recommend the $1299 version of the Y50. If he's just gaming, he's not going to need the 16GB of RAM vs. 8GB, and the 860M 2GB (assuming it's Maxwell) is more powerful than the 860M 4GB(assuming it's Kepler). That's just an assumption on my part though, I'm not 100% sure about whether its Maxwell/Kepler. Besides, even if they were both Maxwell, I assume the 860M can't even take advantage of that extra VRAM.

Side note, does anybody know what the difference is between the two $1299 Y50's besides the CPU? I can't understand why they would be the same price, yet one has a stronger CPU.

I should have mention this laptop will also be used for collage work. Thanks for pointing out the Kepler vs Maxwell I didn't even consider that. On a side note why wouldn't the 860m not be able to take advantage of the extra vRAM?

Gotcha. Unless his major requires that he runs some kind of software on his personal PC that requires >8GB of RAM, I wouldn't be big on paying extra for it.

(From your other response to me) Well, laptops don't get much bigger than the G750 series, heh. Any idea if he plans to carry it around everywhere to class and the library? While I really like the G750 series for it's superior noise/cooling, it really isn't what I'd recommend carrying around all the time.

EDIT: Does he need a lot of battery life for this laptop?

I agree 100% with what you said about the g750 and as for the battery life until he replies i'm going to assume that he will require not a lot of battery for it but at least enough to be usable for a few hours while doing work in class.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for their advice and opinions. I'm "that friend" who is looking for a gaming laptop. Yes, I will use it for school but nothing too advanced (word docs., Power points). Also, yes, I picked these two computers because they are in my price range and they both are portable and thin. Also, battery life isn't that important to me. A decent battery life should be fine.

EDIT: Just so you guys know where my mind is, I'm leaning towards the GS60 Ghost but I'm open to choosing both these computers at this point. I have time to take suggestions. I don't plan on buying anything until the end of the year.

lenovo uhd just three more weeks and it will be available the top end model has a 4k display and an ssd for just 1650 right now

My concern is if the GPU can effectively run current games at this resolution. Also I doubt there will be that much of a noticeable difference between 4k and 1080p at that screen size.

Naah the 860m is not that good probably it will run games fine at 1080p  i think that for productivity the 4k screen would be great and sss is 512gb thats also nice 16gb ram and the 860m has 4gb also so its a better value the base gs60 model is 1699 has a 1080p screen a 860m with only 2gb and 12gb of ram
