Well, I planned out a build today and now I'm trying to cut costs.

Here it is: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/XZwO

Started out as ~$750, calculated tax and shipping in, now $933.

To answer your concerns:

  • I'll be adding an HDD later.
  • I'm going to poach the CD Drive out of my current computer to install Windows.
  • I'm going to buy case fans locally because shipping on them costs twice as much as the fan.
  • 7870XT and 7870 were the same price, so can't really cut costs there...

Questions:

  • Is the power supply ok, or should it be upgraded/downgraded? I plan on overclocking the CPU and GPU a bit. This leads to my next question:
  • Will the motherboard be any good for small overclocks?
  • Are there any things that I can do to cut the cost?

Thanks in advance!

The PSU and motherboard will be fine for overclocking, but don't expect to be able to do a lot of CPU overvolting because the lack of VRM cooling with hamper attempts to do so. One area you could cut costs is by going with a kit of DDR3-1333 ram rather than 1600, the performance difference will be negligible and if the extra speed matter that much to you, almost any 1333 kit with overclock to 1600, sometimes even at stock 1.5V (but if you want to go further, don't exceed 1.65V or you'll fry the memory controller).

Subtotal is ~$700

If you really want to knock out games you could:

Replace the gpu with the 7950: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202026

and the psu with the cx600: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139028
