HDD failing?

So this tends to happen very rarely, but I'm getting anxious to find out if it's what I think it is.

So it seems like my PC just turns the Windows Aero off by itself and I heard strange noises coming from my case, could my HDD be failing? The thing itself is quite old so it would be understandable for it to begin its dying process.

Sometimes I even hear the fan speed going up by itself when Aero goes off which confused the hell out of me.

I had Aero go off after a restart once because a process wasn't going. Try restarting for that.

 

Can you describe the noises? Scratching, weird clicking, what?

I'd say scratching.

I suppose I can pick one up for 45 euros then, I'm running out of space anyway.
