Hi guys,

I'm on the fence about possibly going with a pair of VA or AMVA monitors. The monitor I'm looking at to get a pair of is the Samsung S24C750P (seen here » http://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Monitors/23-24_inch/49935-S24C750PS). The reason that I'm looking at VA monitors as oppose to IPS or PLS ones is because I haven't had the best of luck with IPS monitors (let's just say they've had certain screen defects) and because of certain problems I've had I'm looking to VA monitors to pair with my planned video editing rig.

Now, I've got a couple of questions relating to VA or AMVA monitors for anyone who happens to own one or two of these types of monitors. The questions are as follows:

• Are you satisfied with your VA monitor?

• Is there anything you dislike about your VA monitor?

• Does the off-angle gamma shift annoy you at all (noticeable by moving one's head slightly left or right)?

• Do you notice any black crush on your monitor?

• Have you calibrated your VA Monitor, if so, what level of colour accuracy did you mange to obtain?

• How're you like the higher contrast ratio obtained by the VA display technology?

I hope someone can help me out.

Thanks in advance for your help. :D

One of the most prettiest monitors to date, va/amva panels aren't quite bad although ips or pls lcd's are superior I would've suggested definitely to get a hold of the Dell UH2414H however as the site displays it for 50 euros more than these it's difficult to debate better for 100 euros. Is the shipping included if the product(s) shopping cart is of XXX amount? or they probably don't do that. :(

@Geekazoid what would prevent you from getting a 1440p monitor instead of these babes.

Before you buy it see if you can find a retail store which have both types of panel types, ips might be more common but I wouldn't guarantee it 100%

Yeah, I know it is quite aesthetically pleasing thus the reason I'm looking at getting a pair of them. One of the monitors that I haven't had much luck with are Dell monitors. There are things that aren't to my liking about them that I know others wouldn't find a problem with. Those problems have made me want to steer clear of Dell monitors and I don't believe that there would be anything that could make me go with a Dell monitor again. I also had a little bad experience with Dell's customer service and so this would be one more reason that I wouldn't buy another Dell monitor again.

Well to be honest I do currently have the ASUS PB278Q which I know is extremely popular but I have concerns that I might find the 2560x1440 to high for me with text and that appearing a tad too small. I don't have real bad vision but this is just something I'm concerned about. There is no store close that I can go and have a look at the ASUS PB278Q or any other 1440p monitor so I'm kind of COL (crap out of luck) there. I will say one thing that I do like about the higher resolution, because I video edit in Sony Vegas Pro, I like the extra real estate as it enables me to have a 1280x720 preview of my 1080p videos and so I do consider that a huge plus. But I don't know, are my concerns really warranted? I only ask this because when I went from 1600x900 to 1920x1080 I initially found the higher resolution a tad too small. However, I did get used to it pretty quickly so I'm not sure if I'd have the same experience with a 1440p display.

@wng_kingsley7, something that I have been toying with is skipping any form of 1440p monitor and going straight for the ASUS 21:9 PB298Q 2560x1080 monitor of which I've read next to no negative reviews about. But I've wondered if I'd regret doing that, however, at the same time I don't think that I would. What are your thoughts on this?

The extra vertical real estate of a 1440p display is really useful in video editing.  I have the PB278Q and use it for Adobe Premiere Pro, the ability to fit all the windows I need and a large preview window up is invaluable.  Also, i'm not sure how pricing is in your area but here in the US the Asus PB298Q costs the same as the PB278Q, and you get 360 more vertical pixels with the 278Q, so it seems like the obvious choice to me.

As for your concerns about the higher pixel density and display scaling, the Windows task bar at 1440p is 1/2" tall if that helps.

Well it certainly seems like the best monitor to go for. I know that the PB278Q is widely popular with a lot of YouTubers and other people. It's got almost 200 reviews on Newegg and a decent amount of good pro reviews. You've definitely given me food for thought, thanks :D.

I will say that I did emulate the 2560x1440 resolution on my 23" 1080p, although not the best size to test it on, I did find the higher resolution quite nice in that I could have the Sony Vegas Preview window at a size of 1280x720 vs 854x480 on my 1080p monitor.

Also, i'm not sure how pricing is in your area but here in the US the Asus PB298Q costs the same as the PB278Q, and you get 360 more vertical pixels with the 278Q, so it seems like the obvious choice to me.

Yeah, here in Australia the pricing of the ASUS PB298Q and the ASUS PB278Q are separated by AU$50, with the PB278Q being the least expensive of the two. I guess I feel that it's hard to justify spending such a large amount on a single monitor when it's possible to get two 1080p monitors for the price of the PB278Q. But I guess sometimes you've just gotta take a risk and go for it. It's still difficult though.

As for your concerns about the higher pixel density and display scaling, the Windows task bar at 1440p is 1/2" tall if that helps.

Hmm I'm having a bit of trouble visualising that. I guess my concerns are more to do with whether or not I would find such a high resolution problematic at all for seeing text and other stuff clearly. My vision is pretty good but this still is a concern for me. As stated above, going from a 20" 1600x900 resolution to 23" and a 1920x1080 resolution took a little bit of time to adjust to. So I'm wondering if I'll find it hard to adjust to a 27" screen with the 2560x1440 resolution. I will ask the following:

• Does the extra 4 inches make all that much differences?

• How was your experience using the PB278Q for the very first time and what size screen and resolution did you come from?

I loved using it for the first time and it took no time getting used to the new real estate. I came from a Dell 2405 FPW, a VA 1920x1200 24" panel from 2005. I still use it as my secondary display and it's served me well. The 16:10 Dell is only about an inch shorter than my 278q, so they work well side by side.

My eye sight is around 20/30 and I have glasses, never wear them though. I sit about 24 inches from my monitors and have them set to the smallest text/densest option available in Windows and have no trouble with things being too small. I just love having screen real estate haha.

Hmm...well...maybe I will take the risk and go for it then. I was thinking about going for two ASUS PB248Q 16:10 1920x1200 monitors but I do prefer the 16:9 aspect ratio and your experience has convinced me to go for the ASUS PB278Q. Thanks mate!

Let me know how things work out!  Might be worth checking craigslist in your area, I got mine second hand/almost new for just $350 USD as opposed to $500 new.

Side note, looking at your i7 editing build, how much do GTX 780's cost in the AU?  With that budget you should be able to fit a 770 4gb or a 780 3gb.
