I asked about this in the G3258 video thread, but I feel that it deserves it's own thread.

The old king of budget gaming CPUs is the 6300, but now, based on some rough calculations, that the Pentium K comes out slightly cheaper with a motherboard, and thats with the 6300 having a 970 motherboard. I was wondering what the opinion is on how the G3258 factors into budget builds now.

The 6300 of course has the extra cores, but thats just about it.

The G3258 has better single core performance, a much much better upgrade path, and a better chipset.

So I was wondering what the opinions on 6300 vs G3258 are, and if there are any factors I'm not considering.

Mobo prices.

I'd go with an 8320 and a 70$ish mobo =~ same price as a g3285.

Making a suggestion in a sec.

Thats not accurate. The 8350 is 100$ more, and you can get a nice mobo for the pentium k for 100ish. Thats a 70$ difference.

You have a point. It's worth the more $$. However the 6300 is still a better choice.

I don't quite understand what you're saying (The CPU usage charts would probably help, but I can't get them to load).

The Pentium is worth it if the user is willing to overclock it right out of the box. Then it can unfold its true potential and beat the fx 6300.

If the user hesitates to overclock, its a waste.

I'll agree with this. However that is only for games. For anything else that even has decent multi-threaded performance like video editing or photo editing, a fx6300 will be a better option. Although, I'd spend a few more bucks on a motherboard for though to get its full potential.

However, if you would be willing to upgrade in the future? The Pentium has a much better upgrade path. (4790k and broadwell)

essentially a fx6300 is better or should i say a safer bet.

in games that aren't heavily cpu dependand like bioshock infinite and dota2 and minecraft there willb e no decernable difference but that doesnt mean that you should go for the cheapest because real games that are actually demanding like crysis, battlefield series, anything with the dice engine really or tomb raider, grand theft auto 4 (and likely 5) and so on will usemultiple threads and will distribute the laod across the cores allowing some headroom, hyperthreaded dual cores like the fx4300 and i3's just scrape by on these games, my 8320 is twice the price of the pentium and performs only marginally better in the majority of games so you mgiht think tis a bad deal, the thing is i can set 2modules/4threads to run the game while still ahving half my cpu for rendering, playing youtube, folding and so on at the same time and lose no performance.

the pentium woudl be great in a minecraft server which as far as i know (havent tested so i could be wrong) only use 1 core, so you can have the server/os running on core 0 and the server on core 1

in home theatres or home servers or streamign machines an fx4300 or i3 or even a celeron would be a better option so i cant really see a place for it.
