1. Budget & Location
~$2k, slightly flexible if the value is there to justify the increase in cost.  Located in US.

2. Aim
I mainly will be using this for normal workstation use, alongside with gaming on ultra settings, and occasionally remoting into my work computer for accounting software use.  I'm aware all systems get outdated quickly, especially with X99 & DDR4 right around the corner, but I'm looking to put a solid investment into something that will be able to last for years to come.  I'm also looking to keep this build as quiet as possible, while still retaining sufficient cooling.

3. Monitors
One monitor most likely at 1920x1080.

4. Peripherals
I'm set on peripherals, will pick up another copy of Windows 7 though.

5. Why are you upgrading?

My current setup is pretty outdated, Core2 and a 560TI and it's extremely loud.

Other:

I plan on switching out the stock fans in the R4 as well the H100i's with the Noctuas.  Is this sufficient cooling?

The Formula VI is a placeholder on that link, I plan on waiting for the VII.  Also, I have to run Wi-Fi in my current housing situation.  Is the built in Wi-Fi on the Formula sufficient, or would I be better off with a Hero and a Wi-Fi card?

Any tips or suggestions on replacing components would great!  Any other general tips for a first time builder would be great too.

Thanks in advanced for the help.

That spec looks good to me. Have you considered powerline adapters for your internet connection ? I find them more reliable than wireless network cards.

I had no clue that was even an option, but will definitely give it a shot!  Thanks.

Yup, the mobo is overkilled, a standard wifi card would suit your need just fine. I dont think you even need the Hero if you dont use full function it offer, so you might want to look into something like MSI Z97 G45 or Gaming 5/7 if you want to save alot of money on Mobo

The case is pretty subjective and usually it depend on the user taste, but wouldnt you like a case with side panel to show all the greatness inside :P? Something like Corsair 450D or if you like it big then 750D and 900D(way too big)

Depend on what kind of workstation you are going to do, you might want to have a GPU with a 6GB Memory card, so right now there's already 2 GTX 780 with 6GB memory from EVGA and MSI, and the 780TI with 6GB is expected to come out soon, so... yeah~

My rig: Intel Core i7 4790k | MSI Z97 PC Mate | GSKILL Ripjaws X 16GB 1866MHz | ADATA Premier SP550 480GB SSD | Seagate Barracuda 3TB | Seagate Barracuda 2TB  | MSI Gaming X GTX 1070 | Thermaltake Versa N21 | Corsair CX550M Semi Modular PSU | AOC G2460PF 144Hz | Logitech G502 | GSKILL Ripjaws KM780  | GAMDIAS HEPHAESTUS V2  PCPartPicker | Old Build Log | New Build Log

As for powerline, I remember Linus did a video compare powerline to wifi to normal wired network somewhere on NCIX channel if I'm not wrong... and I think the result is that the powerline is better than wifi but still worse compare to normal wired network, but I might be wrong, so you might want to find that video :P

I'll take a look at those MOBOs, would it even be worth while to get the 4790K vs the 4770K?  My workstation use is very light other than when I remote into my work computer for accounting software, but from what I understand remote systems is more on my work computer.

I do like the R4's design quite a bit, my current setup is LED central and I have actually lost all interest in LED lighting and with the poop brown fans, I'd totally be fine to hide everything in trade with more sound proofing.

Thanks for the suggestions!

A wired network will always be the best option, but it is not always possible to run cables from the router to the pc, especially if there is a large distance between them. A powerline adapter is a good alternative if you don't want wires trailing everywhere  :)

Mmm... if all you do is accounting stuff, then I think maybe even the i5 4690k can handle it isnt it? I'm not sure about it though.

as for the 4770k vs 4790k, it's definitely worth getting the 4790k over the  4770k, the stock clock speed is way better, better OC and all that at the same price (a bit higher in most place) compare to the 4770k.

I know that :P
