upgrading PC

Go to solution Solved by i_build_nanosuits,

this is what i would recommend as of today:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($239.99 @ Amazon)

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SLI ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($117.99 @ NCIX US)

Memory: G.Skill Sniper Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory  ($74.99 @ Newegg)

Video Card: Sapphire Radeon R9 290 4GB Tri-X Video Card  ($369.99 @ Newegg)

Total: $802.96

Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

This motherboard is great and it can do SLI/Crossfire if you may want that in the future, the Sapphire GPU are top of the line AMD graphics cards.

So i was wondering how i should upgrade, right now I am rocking

  •  Mobo:Abit Fata1ity AN9 32X
  • CPU:AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Black Edition
  • Memory: 3Gigs of OCZ 800
  • GPU: SLI GTX 8800 ultra w/msi cooler
  • Storage: 2/ 500GB hard drives
  • CPU cooler: MTEC by Cool IT
  • PSU:Corsair AX860

So what i want to know is should i wait for broadwell CPU and get a Z97 socket mobo, Should i get a GTX 780? or should i wait for the 800 series money is not an issue i just want to be able to run games smoothly and with my setup it only seems bioshock infinie is smooth. Thanks in advance guys!

My Build CPU: AMD anlthon 64 X2 6400+ Windsor Dual Core 3.2Ghz CPU Cooler: CoolIT Eliminator Motherbored: Abit An9 32X Fata1ity RAM: 3GB OCZ Flex XLC DDR2 800Mhz GPU: 2x EVGA GeForce 8800 ultra 756MB GDD3 running in SLI PSU: Corsair AX760 80+ Platinum Case: Corsair Air 540

Keep you case, HDD, PSU, CPU cooler and get new motherboard, RAM, GPU and off you go! Good luck!

I would recommand a Z97 motherboard and i5-4690K if you can afford it on the CPU side, if not your next best pick to save money and still have great performance would be an i5-4460 with an H81 or B85 motherboard...

8 GB of DDR3 RAM any speed is what you need...nothing more, nothing less.

For the GPU then get the best you can afford but don't go over the GTX 780 or R9 290 cause more than that you get diminishing returns fairly quickly...R9 290 is what i would recommand from a price/performance standpoint...don't get reference cooler cards...

Do not cut down on the GPu to get a better CPU, if you're tight get the 4460 + R9 290 or R9 280x.

Ask if you have any concerns/questions.

| CPU: Core i7-8700K @ 4.89ghz - 1.21v  Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z370-E GAMING  CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i V2 |
| GPU: MSI RTX 3080Ti Ventus 3X OC  RAM: 32GB T-Force Delta RGB 3066mhz |
| Displays: Acer Predator XB270HU 1440p Gsync 144hz IPS Gaming monitor | Oculus Quest 3 VR

Nice comment bro!!! okay so i was thinking the same CPU you put (comes out on the 25th right?). and i was thinking of G skill Sniper mem its 8GB of 1866mhz. and for GPU 800 series at the end of the year or EVGA 780 superclocked? Okay so i dont have to trash the whole pc and start over I can build off what i have? Oh and mobo options i was going to do asus Maxmius VII or the Gigabyte GA-Z97X

it is said that the 800 series graphics card will launch in Q2 2015...not the end of the year, so it's almost a full year to wait...and also the new maxwell cards will be more energy efficient but most specialist seem to believe ( and i'm one of them) that the performance increase will be within 10 to 15% only over this generation of cards...the GTX 780/R9 290 are already MONSTERS that can max out pretty much ANYTHING at 1080P 60+FPS...so no i would not wait and i would get one of these right now...the R9 290 is very agressively priced and perform just as good as the GTX 780, only it consumes a little more power and throw some more heat, but nothing to worry about...as long as you do not pick a reference design cooler card.

n SSD is defenetly a nice thing to have as a boot drive, if you could afford a 240GB SSD that would allow you to install some of your favorite games on it and have them load faster (BF4 for example it's very handy, load takes like 30 seconds instead of 2 minutes...) but once the game is loaded the SSD job is done, it won,t improve gaming performance but it does make quicker loadings...

about your CPU cooler i don't know, you should search some information about it to know if it can fit an LGA1150 socket...i can't help with that i'm sorry...if it won't you could indeed consider an H100i watercooler if you can afford one it's excellent, if not there are some air cooler options that won't break the bank and deliver very acceptable performance and overclocking...
