Overloading Power Supply

my first went bang with a large white flash and a bit of smoke

 

my current one (that died only 2 days ago) just decided it would ....  well stop supplying power

Depends how much extra load is put on it and how good the quality of the PSU is.

It's a CM so it will just shut down... I guess...

Depends on the quality of the PSU.

If all the certificate markings on it are real then it ought to just shut down. Maybe blow a fuse or two.

If not then it'll hopefully blow the next fuse in the circuit it's in. Might smell a little and never work again.

And if it's a Deer it'll look like some fairly unimpressive and cheap fireworks.

 

I'd say Cooler Master is most likely in the first category.

My old Thermaltake Litepower made a loud POP then just stopped working, luckily it didn't fry anything with it

A good psu should turn off. A bad one might pop. And take the rest of your pc with it.
