Noctua IndustrialPPC fans

I read on Overclockers UK that you cannot run the 3000rpm 140mm Noctua IndustrialPPC fan off a motherboard header for PWM functionality. Would you be able to control it via a motherboard header, but power it using a molex cable?

There is a 3000RPM PWM version, why wouldn't that work with a pwm header?

Overclockers Uk in there product page for this fan state 'Do not run this fan off a motherboard header'. I was thinking maybe it is because of its' maximum 6.6w power consumption?

They mean don't power it off the motherboard. You can still get the PWM signal from the MB and sent that speed/tachometer to the MB.

So they'll work just like a normal PWM fan when plugged into a MB fan header?

How else would a PWM fan work?
