Hello i'm wondering if any of you have ever tried the external graphics card solution from ViDock (http://www.villageinstruments.com/tiki-index.php?page=ViDock) and i'd like to know if there's any troubleshooting going on with them.

If it works fine i would also like to know if there's any cheaper solutions and if it can handle a beast of a card like gtx 780, 780 ti.

You'd need a Nvidia card so you can enable data compression also if you plan on hooking this up to a laptop your going to need a extra Mini PCI-E slot that runs in at least 2.0 @ x2 also I wouldn't you higher than a 750ti also you'll need a Intel processor and/or have a laptop with a Nvidia GPU that has Optimus.

The laptop i'm planning on using this with is an Alienware m18x with a i7 4700mq processor and double gtx 765ms, it doesn't have an expresscard or thunderbolt slot so would it be possible to use some kind of adapter?

I also wonder why you recommend using an 750ti, is it because the 320w power supply that comes with the ViDock is too weak or is it something else?

With SLI GTX 765M why would you even think about using anything else??

Why would you bother? The GTX 750 Ti is probably far inferior. Not tomention that the dock itself costs almost $300.

There's not enough bandwidth to use anything faster when going through 2.0 @ x2 even with data compression also AFAIK Alienware laptops use MXM GPUs so you could take one of the 765s out and put a GPU of the same TDP or less into it and chose what one you want to use though the Nvidia CP.

Because i'm planning on buying a 120hz monitor in the near future and i want to play demanding games like BF hardline and far cry 4 when it comes out on atleast high graphics settings without AA.

When i tried to play BF4 on high/ultra there was some serious micro stuttering going on and frame drops down to 40 fps.

Another option that i'm considering is getting 2 gtx 870ms from ebay to replace my old cards with but that would cost $150 more than a ViDock + an evga reference model gtx 780.

I don't think it'll work. I think mobile SLI units are simply one card, not two of those replaceable units.

EDIT: I dunno, I'm not exactly familiar with these types of things and I've seen implementations of two GPUs on one card and others where there are two cards.

At least in the M18x they are independent units.  The upgrade is pretty easy.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AitCbvv3lcQ

the overall cost of buying the MXM modules may actually be more than buying a brand new laptop

and you also need to consider that not all modules are made the same

if you somehow damaged the modules while installing, you pretty much paid a lot for paperweight/bookmarks

Have looked at this before since I wanted it for my MacBook Pro via Thunderbolt...The price of these things for Thunderbolt is even worse...

just didn't catch on and was downright expensive

it had a GT8600 256MB GPU
