Graphical Artifacts While Playing One Game

Go to solution Solved by flibberdipper,

So I verified the game cache, which fixed nothing. Then I did a clean install on my own computer. After about an hour I began to see artifacts again.

I played Psychonauts for a few hours last night while waiting for the game to download. Not a single artifact.

I posted this topic in the Steam forum for Just Cause 2. There is at least one other person who is experiencing a similar issue with the game. This other person is moving back to older drivers to see if that fixes the issue.

At this point it seems obvious to me that this is the game's fault.

Yeah, now I would have to say that it is most definitely the game's fault.

So I recently purchased Just Cause 2 on Steam. My system runs it at maximum without breaking a sweat. Even in demanding areas my GTX 770 only hovers around 70C, according to Afterburner.

The problem is that I'm now getting some pretty bad artifacts while playing. They come in the form of huge pillars stretching into the sky. The GPU is not overheating (as far as I can tell) and this is the first time I've ever experienced this in a game.

My driver version is 337.88.

Last night I ran Unigine Valley a couple of times just to see if I could reproduce the problem, but I didn't get any artifacts. The benchmark gets my GPU up to 80C pretty easily.

So how can I rule out a dying GPU? If it is failing, will it artifact in any game? Just Cause 2 is the only demanding game I own at the moment.

The reason I'm posting this here is because this morning I got on and encountered an artifact within five minutes of playing. My card wasn't even hot at this point. So the game either really hates my driver, or I need to contact Gigabyte.

Thanks in advance.

Is there a possibility that it's a corrupt download?

Well there weren't any issues while downloading it. I used my brothers computer and then transferred the "Just Cause 2" file onto a flash drive. The download and transfer all took place on my account. Steam verified the files on my computer when I told it to install the game.

I did it this way because my internet is very slow.

One of my games got a little screwy when I did it that way. You could try to take it over to his house and download it there.
