couple of questions, i havent really searched around so you might not even know the answer aswell

i hate how intel keeps changing socket, so im guessing the next chip after haswell refresh will be a new socket so i wont be able to upgrade if i buy z97

what about X99 will the next generation cpu still be socket 2011? or is this unknown? also any idea if x99 is backwards compatable with x79?

i say this because i can buy a z97 motherboard and best cpu or get a x99 (when it comes out) with there low end 6 core cpu.

im guessing there performance would be about the same, i noticed linus new video of 4k gaming, and he using the x79

so i kind of want to future proof my rig, have a socket that will last, ddr4 and i can always upgrade my cpu, if its backwards compatable...

i know x99 isnt out so maybe we cant answer it and id have to wait to find out.

if your going to ask what ill use it for, its just general, bit of this, bit of that, performance will be about the same but im guessing the 6 core will be better with everything

I'm going X99 or skylake, skylake isn't x99 right? lol i'm confused myself...

lol no skylake is not x99 maybe skylake-e but they will probably have a new chipset for that.

Skylake is probably 1145 with socket 1097 or 1197 or whatever they decide to call them.

According to this leaked road map skylake is 1151 :S

-snip-

Indeed about how intel changes sockets, but there actual benefits to new socket designs. Just as the Apple lightning is far superior to the old 30pin. Its annoying, but things change and usually for the better.

X99 is LGA2011, but it is a slight variantion. I beleive it is called LGA 2011-3 (not sure if that is going to be the final socket.) kind of like how there was LGA1150 and LGA1155.

Going form previous years, the difference from X79 - X99 will probably be around 10%-15%. But there are other factors like a stronger IMC and DDR4 support at 2133MHz stock clocks, meaning that high OC on ram will be a very good chance.

Other support for new technoligies and slight changes to old technoligies will also accompany X99.

In terms of Future proof, I imagine if you go X99 when it comes out, you would get at least 2 generations out of it, just going on what happened with X79. You could buy a 3930K at launch and upgraded to a 4930K on the same mobo. (just needed to update your mobo)

6 core will be better with everything

Logically you would think this, however if the software you are using isn't optimized, then you won't be getting your money's worth.

If you have the cash, crave bigger epeen, need the performance or are just wanting a crazy high end rig, I would wait for X99. Otherwise go for X79 or Z97.
