Time for an upgrade :D

Go to solution Solved by PassionFruit,

Welcome to the community Fabio.

I would recommend the 280. It is unbeatable in it's price range and will run most games fine.

About the monitor, it is not suggested to use VGA cable as it is an analog instead of digital. This means that the signal can be degraded by the physical aspects such as the length of the cable.

Good evening to everyone!! So happy to be here!

First let me introduce myself...

My real name is Fabio and I'm from Italy, I'm 19 and I'm a fan of Linus!!!

Now let's get to the problem/question I have for you...

What would you suggest me to buy as a replacement for my ancient GTS 450?

I ask because it served me very well, no dubts about that, but is hot and noisy like hell!!

I play on a 1080p panel through VGA connection (I know it's bad but I realy don't understand why...),

My plan is to upgrade the entire system but I don't know which card to choose...

My budget is around 240$ and I saw two cards that realy got my attention...

_ Gigabyte Windforce OC R9 270X 2Gb (GV-R927XOC-2GD)

_ Gigabyte Windforce OC R9 270X 4Gb; (GV-R927XOC-4GD)

The 4Gb one is about 30 bucks more then the other one...

I wonder if getting the 4Gb one is safer then saving some money and get the 2Gb one...

But there's more... in the middle of the two, as for price, there's a Sapphire R9 280 (non-X) dual-x version...

I know these are a lot of things but I can't decide by myself and I would realy like to listen to your ideas about this whole topic...

Thanks in advance...

                                                                        Fabio(Sbu051995)

Thanks!!!!!! wow I never had so many answers in such a short time!!! Awesome!!!

Starting by my current computer, if you can call it like that, is a complete piece of crap...

Case and mobo are form an Acer M421G, my cpu is an AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition, with 6Gb of ddr2 800mhz ram

My current graphics card, as I said is a Gainward GTS 450 1Gb GDDR5 GS (Golden Sample).

I overclocked my cpu to 4.0Ghz 1.4v and it's cooled by a Thermaltake Contact 29 push/pull.

So sad... :(

Either get the R8 280 or the 4 gig 270X. We can expect next gen ports to require much more vram, so it's a safe bet to get the model with the more vram (when chosing a 270X, not talking about the 280 here). But on the other hand the 270X wouldn't be able to run upcoming games at ultra settings so in the end it's a 50/50 issue. The safest bet is the R9 280. Good luck. :)

What do you expect from these kids? LTT is full of them. 13,14,15 year olds acting on the forums as if it's a chat session. Quantity of the comments is not important. Quality is. And the majority of those high-volume comment posters are just spamming the threads. Apparently this is how you become popular on LTT. Anyways, I'm sorry for going off topic.

Someone already mentioned the benefits of not using VGA, and how it can be affected by outside variables, such as magnets, cable length, or cable quality, but there are a couple other benefits over going digital.

Display Port and HDMI can carry an audio signal along with the display signal, so some monitors with built in speakers could utilize the sound without having to connect a 3.5mm audio cable from your PC to the monitor.

Digital cables can also handle more data, so it can power a higher resolution screen.

Currently, only Display Port can handle enough data for 4K resolutions (3840x2160) at 60 fps, whereas VGA can only output 2048x1536 at 85 fps

The only time when you really need to start considering which cable won't be able to handle the optimal resolution of screens is when you deal with QHD displays (2560x1440)
