Gaming rig upgrade advice

Go to solution Solved by LmeAde2,

Thanks, one final question . My mother board is the intel DB65AL series which is only PCIE 2.0 x16 compatible. Since the gtx 780 is pcie 3.0 how will this effect performance or compatibility ?

It won't effect the performance at all. All current GPU's can't even use the full bandwidth of a PCI-e 2.0 lane yet. It may be an issue for new cards in a couple years.

Hey Guys...Need some gaming rig advice....

My current specs :
cpu :core i5 2500 @ 3.3 ghz (not the K version).
gpu : xfx radeon 6950 1gb
ram : kingston 6 gb ddr3 @ 1333Mhz
psu : corsair GS700

My target is 1080p / 60 fps for all next gen games for atleast 2 years...

For that should I get a new rig from scratch or upgrade this one ?

(Im looking at gtx 780 , 780 ti , r9 290 , 290x but im worried they might get bottlenecked with my current cpu ..since its not overclockable)...

Thanks in advance..biggrin.gif

Your CPU is still blazing fast and won't bottleneck any of the listed cards. For the GPU, either the 290 or 780. 290X is too hot and the 780 Ti is too expensive for the amount of performance you get.

I would get a r9 280 or a 770 or maybe a 780 , A cpu you may be fine but if you really want get a 4670 and if you erally want to throw money get GB of ram Other than that just a new GPU should be fine. Im suprized that that GPU doesnt perform too bad

No bottlenecks with the 2500 mate, just get an R9-290 Gaming/DCU2 than swap to a Z87/97 and a 4670K than or before get an 8GB Ram Kit,

BTW crazy idea, i had a 6950 TF3 2GB for a wile and it is Tough to be honest so my i suggest CF 6950 ,Call Me crazy

For xfire Ill have to get a new mobo....only want to spend on a new gpu , display and some ram ....

So b/w the 780 and r9 290 which would be better...(no need to factor the price in).....ive heard that g sync is pretty impressive...so nvidia seems a better option

Get an ASUS GTX 780 DCUII http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DWV3NM6. It's a HUGE upgrade from an HD 6950. I used to have the HD 6950 and went to the 7950 > R9 280X > 780 Ti now and the first jump to the 7950 was a big upgrade.

I even had my 6950 flashed to the 6970.

Cooler Master HAF XB EVO, ASUS Maximus VII Hero, i7-4790K @ 4.5GHz, Corsair H100i, EVGA GTX 980Ti SC, Corsair Vengeance Pro 2X8GB 1866Mhz CL9, 2X Crucial M500 960GB, EVGA SuperNOVA 1050 GS, ASUS ROG Swift PG278Q w/ nVidia 3D Vision 2

A Pentium G3220 doesn't bottleneck a GTX 670, you can imagine how an i5 wouldn't bottleneck at all, anything.
