Budget (including currency): ~1100€

Country: Slovenia

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: AAA Games, Football Manager, Matlab

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

Current build:

CPU: Ryzen 5 3600

MOBO: B450-A PRO Max

RAM: T-Force 16GB @ 3200 MHZ

SSD: SN850X 2TB

HDD: Toshiba 1TB

GPU: 1660 Super

Case: Zalman S2

PSU: BeQuiet! Straight Power 12 550W

Monitor1: AOC 24' 200hz 1080p

Monitor2: Acer 24' 144hz 1080p

Here's what I would be upgrading to: https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/7YcBck I would love feedback on this, what would you change/keep, are there any other/better CPU options out there etc some input on RX 9070 v RTX 5070 would be nice as well, from how I see it. RX 9070 has more VRAM, but Nvidia's software and DLSS make the RTX 5070 better, even if the VRAM is lacking.

For some context, I made a post similar to this 1 year ago when I was deliberating upgrading/making a new build. At that point I decided for neither, I obviously regret this decision knowing what happened with RAM prices, but ho hey, nobody owns a crystal ball, right? Regardless, my current build is a year older and I want to experience some of the newer games on high graphics and frame rates. Thanks!

Note: would you consider waiting for AM6, save some more money or is that not currently on the horizon any time soon?

Honestly, with RAM prices I would just upgrade as you're thinking.  5700X plus 9060XT for example will be amazing at 1080p.  Not sure i'd go 5070, but for that money I'd get the 9070Xt as it's a faster card for barely less.  Plus with a 9060XT, you don't need a new PSU.

Hi there!

Thank you for the quick reply, I appreciate your help. Would you consider the 9060 XT a good enough card for the next ~5 or so years? I remember it wasn't very well received by the tech public, but I believe that was down to AMD's shady release tactic, correct? I know I only game on 1080p, but still I'd prefer something that would be more future-proof (I know that word is hated in the tech space xD)

As for the other parts, like the cooler and the PSU (if I decide to go down the better GPU lane), are they high quality parts? I know the Thermalright Peerless Assassin is widely liked, but I have no idea about PSU, I'd appreciate some suggestions for those two if you think there's something better value 🙂

As always, thank you for your patience and help.

AM6 should come out somewhere in 2028/2029 so if you want to wait these 2-3 years, sure

if you feel like you need an upgrade now, go for it

image.png.eed5fb31bde3756e00bcdf33f1813448.png

I would also recommend you to play in 1440p to avoid the bottleneck

though looking at your budget and considering your upgrade i dont think you could fit a 1440p monitor without cutting the costs on other components

about the VRAM

12GB, especially GDDR7, should definitely be enough, no game needs more to be playable (unless maybe in 4K)
my friend is running a 4070 super 12GB and plays most games in 1440p high/ultra with RT on
16GB of VRAM is kinda just the techtok standard, most people dont need it, its more about the entry level 4K cards or 8/16 gig variants
in the end of the day if you look at the charts most people run 2060s, 3060s, 3060Ti's, 4060s or 5070s so either 8 or 12 GB cards
and for 1080p that you currently play on that is not even a question

just check which one performs better in your favorite games

if you do stuff like video editing just go Nvidia

I'm guessing your existing ram is a single stick of 16?

I would go with this: https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/WJrPV4

Went with 2x sticks of 16 gigs of memory instead, and swapped out some parts to avoid the ASUS tax. From what I have read Palit makes fine GPU's and Seasonic makes good PSU's so no reason to pay extra for ASUS products that will perform the same.

It's about 11.50 euros more, which I think is fine for double the ram.

Hi, that's my bad. I have 2x8GB sticks and those that I'm eyeing are the exact same timings as well - 16-18-18-38

At 1080p, with how things are going now?  Yes, especially with FSR maturing so well, and the announcement of multi frame gen.  Granted we can't know if Unreal8334 is coming out in 4 years and going to take an entire Supercomputer to run 🙂

If it were me, with your situation and money, I'd do the 5700X and 9060XT 16GB to ride things out.  If it were me and my money (and brain issues), I'd do the 5700X, RAM and 9070XT and going AM5 when the next chips come out.

Not sure where you got that chart, but it's grossly underinforming.  It's just not that cut and dried.

Nor is the VRAM argument, it varies by game, settings and resolution a LOT.

at 1080p high refresh rate gaming the difference between 7500f DDR5 and 5700x DDR4 is pretty significant ,
especially in terms of 0,1 and 1% lows .
this way you also get a brand new platform and not just a sidestep upgrade .

if you would still rather prefer to keep your current platform than i would go for rtx 5070 and also add another 2x8gb of 3200MHz memory to it
and buy either ryzen 5600xt or 5700x/5800x (5600xt is much cheaper - at least on amazon.de at the moment
and it offers basically the same gaming performance as 5700x)

Honestly, there more I think about it getting a foot in the door into AM5 and then upgrade the CPU and RAM later down the line does sound more appealing, especially with AMD's long lasting support, I probably use AM5 until 2030s with upgrades!

Sorry for quoting you, but I think this is a best chance to revive this 😅

I've done some scrounging in the used market and what I found is a Ryzen 7 5800x and 32GB @ 3600 mhz on a B450m DS3H Mobo for 330€ but I can probably knock the price down a bit, would this be a good deal?

I can buy a new 'used' but with the receipt and everything RTX 5070 for 530 € and this route is looking really intriguing to me ATM. What do you think? Good deals?

Yes to both.  The combo for 330 is really good, motherboard is the weakest link but adequate.  5800X and 32GB are fantastic.

5070 price is below standard pricing.  What model?  Where would you buy from if you had to buy new, to compare pricing better.  Italy is 599 Euro for example cheapest.

So far, I'd say grab that combo and GPU.  Then we need to look at PSU's most likely.

Well I already have a B450-A PRO Max from MSI and that should be fine for a 5800x, if nowt else it's better than the DS3H.

As for the GPU it would be a Palit card. Not the best but beggars can't be choosers, eh? And yes if I were to buy it brand new it would cost 599€
