Broken... something?

Go to solution Solved by TeamBetaAlpha,

Well, after a clean install of windows, swapping drivers, and updating the BIOs, I think I'm going to call it quits and return the cards. I'm out of ideas, I've tried everything I can think of, I guess I'll return the cards and start saving up for a full system rebuild and when I upgrade my motherboard hopefully I'll be able to get a new graphics card to go with it.

Ok everyone, I'm running out of ideas here. I was running a 3070 and decided to upgrade to a 5070Ti, the thing is when I put in the 5070 my computer spontaneously freezes, then(not always but most of the time) the screens go black. Every time I have to press and hold the power button to get it to shut down, then I can turn it back on. Sometimes it's 5 minutes in other times it won't get past the log in screen without it freezing.

Things I've tried:

I replaced the power supply, upgrading my 850W to a 1000W(this was mostly to use the direct 12vhpwr cord)

I tried the in box adapter that takes 3 PCIe and turns them into the 12vhpwr, actually I used two of them in case one was bad.

I got my first 5070ti as an open box unit from microcenter, I assumed it was just a bad card, went and got a brand new one from Best buy today, same issue.

I used the 12vhpwr straight from the power supply to the 5070

Reseated the 5070 and the 12vhpwt on both cards multiple times

Uninstalled and reinstalled Nvidia drivers

Reseated RAM

Double checked all the power runs to the motherboard

Removed 2 other storage drives I had installed (one time I had an ssd fail so hard it stopped my computer from booting if it was plugged in so I just pulled them to help narrow things down)

Other things of note: I have the fans on my AIO set to ramp up with CPU load and they often go full blast right when it freezes(or like one or two seconds after it freezes), and I can feel the exit line from my AIO and it's hot so I know the CPU is working hard when it freezes. Also, when I put the 3070 back in, everything works fine, currently I'm using my computer with the 3070 plugged in and everything is working fine.

PC specs:
EVGA 3070 XC3
Microcenter card: gigabyte 5070Ti wind force
BestBuy: MSI 5070Ti gaming trio

I9 10850k

32gb ram(4 channel)

Motherboard: gigabyte z490 Aorus Ultra

corsair RM850x, and RM1000X

Is there something I'm missing here? Why am I having such a hard time with this upgrade?

What PCIe gen is the bios set for? I think gen 3 is the max for that board, but the gpu should be backward compatible. You should try AUTO if it's set to a specific gen.

Have you checked Gigabytes site for bios updates?

I couldn't find something that was specifically "PCIe gen" setting but I found what I think would be the equivalent and it was set to auto, my BIOS is currently at f5 and the newest is f10 so I will for sure update that and then try the card again.

Would an old BIOS cause a problem like this though? In my naivety, I would think once the computer boots to windows the BIOS wouldn't really come into play much after that but as I'm typing this out I can feel how wrong that statement is haha

Did you try a fresh windows install?

I haven't, I did the little windows restore/fix thing where it tries to fix itself, but I don't know if it worked because I had the 5070 in and it crashed twice while doing it. I was trying to avoid doing a fresh windows install but if the BIOS update doesn't fix it I think I'll put the 3070 back in and do a reinstall. I really think it has to be a software issue not a hardware issue and if the drivers are up to date and the BIOS is up to date I think that points to windows doing windows things.
