Budget (including currency): 4k CHF

Country: Switzerland

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Competitive shooters, AAA games, some video editing, scientific simulations

My work is subsidizing part of my new computer and it's going to be the last computer I buy for the next 6+ years.

I'm going to use it for productivity (work from home - scientific computing), but also gaming.

Budget is less of a concern since I can offload most of the cost to my company, however some parts are not easy to get through their channels, so I'll buy them myself, like CPU and case.

I need some help with my decisions. I'll list my current parts picks, if you see anything weird/stupid please do let me know. I follow tech channels on youtube but I've never built a PC.

| Part Name | Model | Notes
| ------------- | ------------------------ |--------------------------------------------------
| CPU | 9950x3D | Great for productivity without compromising in gaming
| RAM | Trident Z5 Neo CL30 64GB | There shouldn't be a noticeable different using CL < 30. 64 GB for productivity + future proofing
| Motherboard | ROG Strix B850-E | No particular reason, I like ROG and this board supports additional PCIe slots, in case I need them
| GPU | RXT 5080 (ROG astral) | The 5080 is not a great deal, it'll have to last me for many years, so I'll take the small performance gain over the 5070 Ti
| CPU cooler | NZXT Kraken Plus | Inefficient price to performance, but I like the looks
| PSU | AsRock phantom 1000W | Not sure if I should go with the 1300W version
| Storage | Samsung 9100 PRO 1TB | New boot drive + some extra space. I have enough storage I can take from my old machine
| Case | Lancool 217 | Great looks, great price. Everything should fit.

- I'm mostly unsure about the PSU. I chose this model because it has a fail safe to avoid melting 50-series cables and the price seemed reasonable. Regarding the power I'm not sure.

- RAM is CL30 @ 6000 MHz, is there a noticeable benefit in choosing < CL30?

Please let me know, thank you!

There is really no benefit by going CL28 over CL30, it really is not noticeable.

1000w PSU is plenty fine for this setup, it would run on a solid 850w.  The AsRock Phantom 1000w is an A+ PSU, good choice 🙂

The ROG ASTRAL RTX 5080 is one of the most expensive 5080's, but I guess if the company is paying for it, why not?

I don't really see anything wrong here.

As a corporate accountant, I see a lot wrong here but that's me.

Just because it's not an individual paying, SOMEONE still pays.

Frugailty is still appropriate.

But if it's only partial pay and the op covers any coverage, go for it.  Tho the astral is a waste.

Sure, I get that.

But why don't you mention where he can save a significant amount of money on this build instead of just telling us that he can.

You see a lot of wrong, mention what is wrong.

As I wrote, the Astral 5080 is way too expensive for what you get.

I really see no place else he could save a siginificant amount of money. Maybe on the SSD but they are crazy priced now'a'days as well.

Yes OP could get a cheaper cooler and we can nitpick on components to save a few dollars here and there, but its obviously not a build on a tight budget.

No it was more the attitude if work is paying I'll go all out.

If that's what he wants, go for it.  Does he need it? No idea, since he hasn't explained what the science stuff is, or runs on.

My objection was more on an ethical side.  Way too many people look at their company as deep pockets, won't miss it, they owe me , etc.  people should treat company money as frugally or more so than their own, as they are spending coworker and owner money.

But if he gets an allocation and then has to pony up the rest, my point is moot basically

I just wanted to "I object, your honor!"

But yeah, the astral is dumb as fuck.

First of all I agree the astral is extra expensive, and I am also on the fence about it. However, let me point out that it's 100 bucks more than the TUF version here, so I wouldn't say it's an absurd purchase.

Secondly the idea is not to go all out. The idea is to get a high end PC that will last for years to come.

Sure I could save 100 bucks by choosing a different memory kit and a different CPU cooler, however the rest is a need for my use case.

I was given unlimited budget for this purchase, but I'm not insane so I'm not getting a 5090 and 256 GB of ram. To be honest I probably would have a use for a 5090 for heavier simulations, but it costs as much as this entire build.

| Part Name | Model | Notes

| CPU | 9950x3D | Great for productivity without compromising in gaming

| Case | Lancool 217 | Great looks, great price. Everything should fit.

- I'm mostly unsure about the PSU. I chose this model because it has a fail safe to avoid melting 50-series cables and the price seemed reasonable. Regarding the power I'm not sure.

- RAM is CL30 @ 6000 MHz, is there a noticeable benefit in choosing < CL30?

Please let me know, thank you!

100 bucks really ain't that bad, its 400 dollar different here in Norway between the 5080 TUF and the 5080 Astral...

I think the build looks good and definitely one that will last you a few years ^^

The 9950X3D2 is set to launch on April 22nd, is that something you might want to wait to check out?

Reviews will most likely go live on the 21st.

So the 9950X3D has two CCD's, 8 cores per CCD. And it only has X3D Cache on 1 CCD.

The 9950X3D2 will have X3D Cache on both CCD's, so all 16 cores instead of 8.

How much faster it will be in pure gaming performance, we'll just have to wait and see.

Probably not a lot but some games do take advantage of the X3D Cache.

I gained about 70 frames in Hell Let Loose by swapping my 7700x out for a 9800X3D and using the same graphics card at 1440p.

But that is the only game I saw such significant increase.
