ok, so I have a truenas scale server running 25.04 and I have a custom yaml’d tailscale id and relay server on here:

yaml:

services:
  hbbr:
    image: rustdesk/rustdesk-server:latest
    container_name: rustdesk-hbbr
    command: hbbr
    network_mode: "host"
    volumes:
      - /mnt/ssdfast/rustdeskserver:/root
    restart: unless-stopped

  hbbs:
    image: rustdesk/rustdesk-server:latest
    container_name: rustdesk-hbbs
    command: hbbs -r 100.124.157.86:21117
    network_mode: "host"
    depends_on:
      - hbbr
    volumes:
      - /mnt/ssdfast/rustdeskserver:/root
    restart: unless-stopped

my problem is that I can’t get it to seem to work with tailcale as well so I can access the server though tailscale and then use it to connect to my vms on the truenas scale server, the tailscale container is bound to host as I need it to be like that so I can also access my jellyfin container, any idea on how to get it to work? the 111.ip address is the tailscale ip address right now

Imagine everything i have written in a Linus Voice/ linus tone (Spock live long and prosper gif here ,idk why tho, i guess i just want to say that i like star trek and am waiting for new seasons of the ongoing shows), But seriously, a lot of what i type only makes sense when said in a Linus tone from an older ltt video (circa 2017-2019 & now 2024-onwards) basically before he got a beard and a lot of it should make sense even in a Linus with a beard face.

also note as per the latest typing test on my laptop, my accuracy is 69%

I'm not weird/creepy, I'm just observant I have ADHD and am not on any meds for it because I don't want to and don't need to be on meds. i also may just be depressed. If you find other things around you depressing, are you depressed or are you surrounded by depressing things?

I’m confused. Why do you need rustdesk server running on TrueNAS itself to connect to VM’s? If you are VPNed into your network (which you are if you are using tailscale), the Remote Desktop service needs to be running on the VM’s, not TrueNAS…. Right? And they don’t need to be “bound” to tailscale, since you will be VPNed into your local subnet, assuming it al works when you are local, it’ll all work when you are remote.

I have not used rustdesk, so maybe there is something I am missing…

rustdesk needs the hole punching done for it either by a dedicated rustdesk server or by tailscale, the problem i face is that my vm needs other vpn's also running on it so the split tunnelling which would be required doesn't seem to work, hence the try to access the server from tailscale on truenas and then use it to relay to the vm idea

Can you use rustdesk on the VM’s when you are locally on your LAN?

If tailscale is setup and working correctly, you should end being able to access things as if you were on your LAN. My tailscale split tunnel also doesn’t work right on my phone, most likely due to some iPhone DNS issue I haven’t been able to figure out. But on my MacBook it works perfectly.

It’s likely a subnet issue (whatever subnet your tailscale connections ends up on not having access to the subnet it needs access to to use rust desk), or a DNS issue where it just isn’t seeing the hostname.
