Hi all, I've had this LG G4 OLED 4K TV for less than a year now and today I noticed this bright mark.

Can anybody tell me what could be the cause? Nobody touched the TV for several months and even if they did, we found it hard to even find an object that could've done this (as you can see the main area of impact is less than 5 pixels wide).

This TV does have anti-reflective coating as well as MLA (Micro Lens Array) technology. On the first 2 photos you can see that reflection changes rapidly depending on the viewing angle.

We also didn't notice any indentation or crack whatsoever, the texture under microfiber cloth does change ever so slightly when going over it. It doesn't affect the viewing experience, it's only seen when the display is turned off.

Also, this part of the screen is under direct sunlight but we doubt that could've caused harm, we'd see multiple of these across the screen because at least 1/3rd of the TV is under direct sunlight in the morning.

So, what could this be? MLA failing? AR peeling off somehow? I seriously want to believe this was physical damage caused externally but I quite literally can't find the cause. Maybe, just maybe if we had rocks laying around and throwing them at the TV in our spare time this would've happened.

You should protect all electronics from direct sunlight as they can overheat or cause plastics to break down but especially screens where there are multiple ways it could destroy the screen itself.  I wonder if the sunlight hit a specific lens at the wrong angle and melted the screen.

Posted (edited)

I've got an E7 and I've never seen such damage.

I can imagine it being due to those fancy MLA, lenses catching light at the wrong time, the wrong place.

Still, you're lucky, it doesn't affect the viewing experience, could have been worse.

(that could be one reason why they got rid of MLA)

Do you still have warranty ?

It's been just under a year since purchase so yeah, warranty is still there. The tricky part is proving it wasn't under direct sunlight since warranty will probably be declined if it were.

I'd try it.

1 you're saying the truth, stand your ground

2 it could be it is a known issue

Yes that's what I was wondering too! We had a Panasonic Plasma TV for almost 20 years and nothing happened to it under direct sunlight but yeah, definitely could be an issue. I don't even think the TV is under direct sunlight for more than 20mins daily and it's usually before noon too.
