Hello everyone, I wasn't sure where to start this topic, but this was the first place that came to mind. Steam has released a utility called Game Compressor, which claims to allow you to compress games without losing performance and continue playing.I hesitated to download it because there weren't any test videos online, but the reviews suggest people are satisfied. Is there anyone who can try it out, who can do the tests? :D I don't want to take the risk myself, but I think I have brave friends.

Steam did not release this. Some developer did and released it on steam. Thats a VERY big difference.

Running drive compression is not new and is valid depending on the usecase. This is something that seems similar to that but does it for directories. It will need testing as it will be unpacking some files on the fly and having to on the fly decompress.

ah my bad you are totally right i phrased that poorly. I meant an indie developer released it on steam not valve themselves.

And yes exactly the store page mentions it uses windows lzx on-the-fly decompression. That's exactly why I'm hesitant to buy it without seeing benchmarks. I'm really curious if this constant unpacking actually causes fps drops or stuttering in cpu heavy games. Do you think modern  cpus can handle that kind of background decompression without a hit?

Not sure why the OP didn't include this but here it is:

NTFS has had seamless file compression for over 30 years.

The specific LZX compression they called out has been part of Windows for at least 7 years. You can create a Scheduled Task that runs the compression command on your SteamApps folder for free.

Welcome to the forums!
It needs to be said, this absolutely does elevate CPU usage, so if you're already running close to the limit of your CPU, you may see degraded performance, but unless you're on old hardware at 1080p, you should be fine
As for other options, yeah, sure, there are options that only require your labor, but if this is easier (and I don't know that it is), maybe your labor is worth 5 bucks
