I have a general question regarding laptops that I've been pondering for years. What is the big concern about weight?

I'm, currently, 72-years-old,  walk with the assistance of a cane, about 1-1/2 miles daily to my favorite coffee shop carrying an, the last time I weighed it, an 18-ish pound backpack with a Dell 17" laptop, 15"inch 2nd screen, multiple cables (and many cables, chargers, and other devices I don't need, but on the rare occasion other customers do have need of them and their weight is negligible, There's also a first aid kit, used multiple times, a toolkit, flashlight, and most importantly my LTT water bottle - which by-the-way works for my heart medication - COFFEE.

Why does anyone care about ergonomics? Or posture? Or anything?

That's just bad for your back, and you are willing to accept that. Others aren't....  🤷‍♂️

As with most things, there is not just a right or wrong answer. It's about what you want to do and are willing to accept the pros AND cons of. A lot of people have growing concerns over long-term physical health, and for good reason, so the weight of every day items that we carry all the time is a bigger deal than it once was.

This guy likes his commas

I suppose most people would be in agreement that lighter is better, especially if you have a long commute to work. If weight can be saved, then that's a good thing, unless it compromises on the device's performance / thermals

Having to carry less is always nice, If I need to bring my laptop/equipment anywhere for work weight makes a big difference. If i'm traveling for work I always have to bring additional equipment with me and every little bit adds up fast. I use a rolling bag to get through the airport and into the jobsite but once i'm inside I have to carry everything while wearing steel toe boots and the rest of my PPE. For work I have a dell precision and a surface, traveling the dell stays at home/office unless I have to have it for modeling/processing and I take the surface instead. The difference in size and weight makes a big difference. For the little bit that you're taking with you and the shorter distance it's not a big deal but when you need to carry a bunch of other stuff it can make a big difference.

And some people may have injuries or other disabilities where the extra weight may hurt or cause them difficulty. I have to be really careful with what I lift or do because i've injured my back, neck, shoulder and knee and i'm only in my early 30s.
