Need some help with data back up

My approach would be to:

  • install an OS onto the new pc with only the new parts. Get that system situated with driver updates etc
  • Grab the old drive and plug it into the new PC as an additional drive
  • boot into the new OS on the new drive.
  • gain access to the old files on the old drive. Move over whatever he tells you to move over.
  • extract the old drive and hold onto it for a few months to a year in case you forgot something.
  • there’s functionally no limit to how long you can hang on to that old drive, but it’s also a pain in the ass to keep track of somebody else’s data lol

I’ve used this method for my own pc upgrades as well as upgrading the PC my mom runs her engineering company off of. In her case, she primarily runs her business off of her google workspace storage, but there’s still stuff that ends up living in the downloads folder that turns out to be mission critical. Which is why you hold onto it for a while 🙂 good luck out there! 

So I'm currently in the process of replacing my Dad's old computer as it is failing as the CPU is semi fried. Anyway I am going to build the system myself, my main question is how would I back up all of his files on his old HDD to the new-ish SSD? I'm asking this as I am aware you can clone storage devices but I've only ever seen it done just to replace the storage device (like upgrading the HDD to an SSD on your old gaming PC) on the same device, never in a completely different system.

For context my Dad's current computer has:
Ryzen 3 2200G (using iGPU)
ASUS Prime A320M-K
ADATA 1x8GB 2400Mhz DDR4 UDIMM
WD Blue 1TB 7200RPM HDD
Windows 10 (unable to upgrade to WIndows 11)

And I plan to replace it with:
Intel Core i5 12400 (using iGPU)
Gigabyte B760M Gaming X WIFI6E DDR4 GEN5 mATX
Kingston Fury Beast 2x8GB 3200Mhz DDR4 UDIMM
Samsung 860 EVO 500GB SSD (Spare one laying around)
Windows 11

I know how to build computers but data backup is an unfamiliar territory for me. Annoyingly whoever built my Dad's old computer kinda has the files like everywhere so how would I back up only his files and not like the operating system or anything onto the mentioned SSD? If you're wondering the computer is only for office work (like viewing and editing PDFs) and watching YouTube videos. And yes 500GB is enough for him as he has barely used 50GB (excluding the OS) on the 1TB HDD as most of the work he does is cloud based anyway. And I can get the old computer itself stable to do a data transfer or whatever. If possible please suggest a video as I don't know what to search up.

If the two computers can work at the same time in the same network, you can just share a folder, where is data is ( usually all of it should be in his user profile )

 

and you can always just take the HDD out and plug in to the new PC, and just copy the folders with the data.
