Hello all!

I have a basic intel nuc computer, and have zero use for it. I have some USB hard drives and thought how nice it’d be to have a travel NAS server for whenever I travel with my broadcast production team (we also do photo and video content) and keep it all in one case.

we wouldn’t exactly be working off of it, but it’d be nice to have somewhere to offload old events and projects.

a list of equipment would be nice. And nothing too complicated. Just need something I, and others, can access through finder on their MacBooks.

any recommendations welcome! And please focus on simplicity as this kind of stuff isn’t my forte 😅.

Welcome!

If you're not actively working on it and you reliably have Internet service on the road, set it up at home and access it remotely with Tailscale. One less thing to lug around!

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

Many different types of NUC/Mini PC, so more information on the specific one would be helpful 🙂

OR

you can go with a backpack-able mini vault with like a Silverstone ml08 and an itx board paired to a 10100 for power management reasons. Four 2TB SATA SSD's in a RAID 5 gives good redundancy.

Hey! Thanks for responding.
I don't know exactly what Nuc I have, so I apologize.
I do believe however, it is an ITX board.

Ideally, I'd like to be able to have this computer, small router, and a USB hard drive (with a UPS) inside of this moderately sized travel case.

An even better solution would be if I was on the road, or at an event, I could just connect from anywhere so long as I had an internet connection and I could just leave it in my office.

Any videos out there/instructions that are simple and easy to follow?

Also, any good videos explaining RAID? I know very little about it.

For a basic "server" build, LTT did a pretty good video outlining the basics.

Another great one from the Techquickie channel (hinted at being back online soon)

This video seems to be a pretty good start, gave it a skim and didn't get massively overwhelmed by the process
