I managed to make it work by installing an older driver, taken from the manufacturer (gigabyte), enabling Freesync from there and then updating to the latest drivers. However now i've got a worse problem, after playing for a while the pc completely freezes, the screen goes dark and sound stop working, nothing works but hard rebooting the pc. This happened like 8 times already; is this a common problem with RX 580 or AMD cards in general? Is there a way to fix it?

If you have Over Drive on in the settings of the monitor. Try turning that off. It will be listed as OD. Also remember that Windows will download drivers by default. So after you had downloaded and installed the driver. Windows will end up installing another driver that can end up being an unstable driver. So after you get everything working along comes Windows to install a driver that doesn't work correctly. Use the driver you got from gigabyte and do not update after that. The new and newer drivers are causing the issue.

That link will show you how to disable Windows driver updates. So that Windows will not automatically install GPU drivers that might cause issues. Brand new drivers do not always mean better. The older drivers are a go to when the newer ones cause instability.

I gave my brother my old monitor (Asrock Callenger CL25FF) which is AMD Freesync certified trough HDMI (It doesn't have DP). He has an RX 580 and wanted to use freesync for the first time. Even though Freesync is enabled in the monitor's OSD, set to max refresh rate on windows (even checked with C.R.U. if everything was right) and drivers are updated (i did a DDU clean), AMD Adrenaline states that it's not supported and i can't enable VRR on Windows either. AMD FreeSync monitor list has the monitor in it: "CL25FF    FreeSync    ASRock    25"    IPS    1920x1080    48-100 via HDMI    No LFC    No HDR  FW VERSION: V8-RC13VAS-N01V003 20230725    CERTIFICATION DATE: 2023-09-14"

I don't get it, is it the drivers? Is it the FW version? Is it the cable? All signs point out that it should work. One yt video said that i need to try and change the monitor's ID with C.R.U with other supported monitor but every ID i put it marks it as red and can't accept the changes

Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks for reading

One thing i forgot to say is that on a different computer with an iGPU (Ryzen 3 3200g) freesync worked just fine through the onboard hdmi port, it was a 75hz monitor though

Sometimes all that is needed is to reboot. After installing the driver.

It turned out to be a bigger issue. The gpu kept having this white blinking light while turning the computer on. It was the PSU, so i switched it with other one from another pc that had a less demanding hardware and it worked fine. However the issue with the monitor kept happening but now unplugging the hdmi cable and plugging it again had the image come up again. I disabled the overdrive as you said and didn't happen anymore since. So everything is working as intended now. Thank you so much!

  • 2 weeks later...

I feel dumb coming back to this thread, however i wanted to add an important detail that perhaps other people may encounter as an issue.

It was DDC/CI, i always had it disabled without freesync because windows kept changing my brightness settings for some reason; but it you have it off you won't be able to enable any kind of VRR (at least through HDMI)
